Back on the band wagon
« on: April 04, 2008, 02:41:25 PM »
I almost gave up on my 25-06  Handi after years of tinkering with it.  I was even going to wash my hands of it and had someone that would buy it but I held off a little longer.

I could never get good groups.  The best I would get it sighted in was about four inch groups at 50 yards.

Then I decided to try a big time scope.  I never had one and have a cheapy on it now.  So I bought a Leupold 4 X 12.  Wow, what a difference that made.  I am not done sighting it in, but I am down to almost where I want to be.

I once heard (I think on this board but not sure) you should spend the same amount on your scope that you spend on your rifle.  I went a little higher and it sure made the difference.

Moral of the story - I love my Handi again!!!

Sounds like your on the right track , you can never go wrong with good glass , and remember that a scope is only as good as the mount , on a side note my 25/06 is one of my better shooting Handi's with both 75 gr V-max and the 120 gr soft points .

Speckle, I did the same thing.  We can take the "bargain" on the Handi but the glass has to be of reasonable quality no matter the price !   ::)  Jim

Hey Specklebelly glad to hear you got it shooting good. I've always felt that quality optics are the only way to go. Stimpy also makes a very good point about mounts, a good scope and an accurate rifle are no good if the mount isn't rock solid. I'm a Leupold man and to me a good deal on a used Leupold is how I like to buy mine. A used Leupold is still covered by their excellent warranty and if you keep the scope for a few years you can usaully make a little money on them should you decide to sell. So to me a used Leupold is the cheapest scope to buy, excellent quality, customer service that is second to none, and you get your money back or even make some should you decide to sell.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I once heard (I think on this board but not sure) you should spend the same amount on your scope that you spend on your rifle.

I never bought into that.
If two guys are shooting the same distance at the same target
they need the same quality of sight regardless of what there gun cost.

"The best I would get it sighted in was about four inch groups at 50 yards."

I would be disgusted with those kind of results as well.
I'm getting  groups like that at 200 yds but I'm sure I'll
get it down to 2 inch or better once I fire a few more rounds
through 'er and play with the loads.

Glad to hear you are on the right track now anyways. ;D
