45-410 For Turn-A-Key
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:32:41 PM »
I have a Turkey tag in a couple weeks
and would LOVE to tag one with my Contender.
Some input on doing this with a 10" 45-410 would be great.
What kind of yardage should I limit myself to?
What have you found to be the best factory load?
Thanks in advance from the GREAT people on this site.

Well, the first thing you need to do is find out if it's legal in your state to shoot a turkey with any kind of .410 bore shotgun.

Some states don't let you hunt turkey with any shotgun smaller than 20 gauge.

I have won a couple rounds at our local turkey shoots at 30 yds with my 10" 410.
It has a nice pattern but not many pellets. I would limit it to 15-20 yards with 3" 6's. I don't know if you could find 5's.
In michigan  a 410 would be legal but we can't use a pistol even if it shoots 410's.

I went to the Arizona dept. of F&G  commission website  and read the legal take methods for Turkey and all they said was in article R12-4-304 agfc rules about hunting in line L the article only stated in regards to shotguns shooting shot, did not give a gauge minimum requirement for the take of turkey's, you should probably contact them yourself to make sure. besides 410 is a caliber not a guage so i don't know how that play into it ? superdown

Thanks Guys.
I was talking to the local wildlife Manager
last year in camp about wanting to us my TC
and he just stated that that would be cool.
My understanding of the Regs. says its legal.

How many hits can you put in the kill zone at...say 25 yards.  If it's not 8-10 on a regular basis then I don't think I'd risk wounding a bird.  GOOD SHOOTIN,  Walt

I am headed out after work to see how it patterns.
I don't think I would take a shoot past 20 yds with it.
I have some #6 shot and will try to pick up some #4
Thanks,
Mike

Just got back from testing 4 factory loads at 20yds.

The best was the Federals #6, nice group in the center
with a nice expansion group out to about 16" and then erratics out to about 24"
I feel pretty good about this round on a bird at that range.

Next was the Rem Express #6 with about the same group size
but lacking the tighter center group.

Third was the Winchester #6
It was getting pretty scattered.

And last was Winchester #4
It would be luck to get 1 BB in the head.

Feeling pretty good about being able to take one in the 20yrd range
but I will take my shot gun for a QUICK follow up if needed.

I sure wish someone had some feedback that has tried/done this before

Have shot the 410 for snakes, closer is better most of the time. I tried it out at the range, 15 yards or so.  In this area, the wide open spaces don't permit you to get close enough to use the barrel for turkey-we don't have enough trees to stalk close.

But, at 25 feet, snakes don't keep their heads long.

I would be hunting out of a blind and trying to call one in with the use of a decoy.
If I could not get the bird within 20 yds then there would be no shot.
If a Stud of a Gobbler was coming in and hung up past 20 than I could pick up the shotgun.
