.41 mag Titanium 4" KICKS hard!
« on: August 02, 2006, 11:08:06 AM »
Well, I certainly didn't expect to get the amount of recoil out of this gun, especially being ported. This gun was left to me in my brother's will. I finally decided to shoot it yesterday. Factory Federal 210 gr ammo. I thought to myself, "this gun is ported, not my .44 mag and should be a nice little shooter/low recoil". Boy was I wrong. Had my mother been with me, I would have gone crying to her after my first shot. That thing kick like a pack mule (you know pack mules kick harder than regular mules). All kiding aside. That gun verges on uncomfortable to shoot. I went ahead and shot 50 rounds through it and put it away. My 9mm felt like a .22 after that gun.

Anyway, I origionally thought I would use this Taurus Titanium in place of my Ruger Redhaw in .44 mag should I try my luck at hangun hunting this year. I will stick to the Redhawk. Not that I didn't like this gun. It fit my hand well and was very accurate (I love those "shoot N' see" targets).

I guess there is a lot to say about a gun's weight for recoil reduction VS. porting (in this case anyway).

Yes, pack mules are notoriously hard kickers, but I understand that old army mules are the worst.

Yeah...  Try full house 320 grn casts out of the titanium .44, non-ported, a full cylinder makes your hand punch you right in the face, and tell you to quit it!  Anything which is made out of titanium and marked "magnum" is a force on the old wrists.

Try some lighter loads than 210gr in your Titanium. For instance I hate the mule kicking 240gr loads in my Redhawk preferring 180gr. This months CombatGuns Magazine has a good article on a 41mag and lists some different loads.

I recently tried a cast 180 grain loaded by a friend who hunts with his .41. It runs at 1,180 and is much more pleasant to shoot.

A blackhawk also weighs twice what a M444 weighs.  You can't compare a full size handgun to a titanium handgun.  Compare the blackhawk to the raging bull with same length barrels.  The RB is going to be more pleasant because of the weight and the large grip.

Comparing apples to grapes......

Titanium is nice and light to carry but you pay for it in recoil.

What the heck did ya expect?? I looked at the 5 shot ti tauruses, considered the 41 mag but figured it would have to kick bad so I bought a 44 special instead, model M445Ti 2" bbl. I load my own and started with the starting loads in the load manual, as I worked up to mid power loads I found the recoil quite unplesent and have backed down to starting loads for comfort. 200 gr Speer Gold Dots. With the milder ammo it is very pleasent to shoot.

I think Taurus made these Titanium framed revolvers to be for packing as a "just in case the need arises" kinda gun more than a regular shooter.  My Blackhawk was uncomfortable to shoot in original new condition with full power loads, but after break-in and then a set of Hogue rubber grips that fit my large paws better it calmed down.  I am planning on buying a new 5 shot SRH  in 480R for a hunting pistol and may cut the  Blackhawk down from 6.5" to 4.5" to make it more suitable for a packing gun.

Although it is a nice little gun, I don't think I have much use for one. I haven't shot it since the original post I did. I thought about selling it back then but the thought of selling something of my brother's after his passing didn't sit well with me. I use a lot of the guns that he left me and enjoy them quite a bit. I don't think that selling one is that big of a deal now. Plus, I know that he would want me to have something that I have a use for and enjoy shooting. So, I am thinking about selling that gun. I might take it to the range one more time before I do. We'll see.

I really like the idea of a nice, light .41 mag for carrying on the trap line or snow shoeing.  Right now I carry a 6 1/2 inch Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag.  I am always worried, because it is blue and sometimes I really take a tumble in the snow.  If I'm out all day or even over night and the gun has been dunked in the snow, I get pretty worried about rust.  Plus it is a bit heavy.  I carry it a lot and only shoot it (while out in the woods) once in a while.  So excess recoil would not be a big issue with me.  For regular shooting and plinking I'll stick to my Blackhawk.

The tracker is a 5 shot right?  So it is about the size of a S&W "L" frame?

Sure sounds perfect to me.
Thanks from the Frozen Northwoods!!!

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.
