leader/tippet question
« on: May 04, 2005, 11:01:55 AM »
New to flyfishing. Got a question. Am I supposed to tie an extra length of tippet to the end of my leader, or just tie the flies to the end of the leader? :?
I've shot many a sassy bandit with just my pistol!

Dear Rugbynut:
You may find that with changing flies, ( or loosing em to snags, ect.) the tip gets a bit thick, so an extra bit of tippet material works fine.
One of the things about fishing tackle is that much of what seems like a hard and fast rule, is really subject to your personal preference.
I use store bought tapered leaders, as well as my own tied leaders and fasten on what I think the situation needs. The bought stuff usually gets a little added, even when brand new. My tied tapers are mostly used for 3 wets or big streamers.
I definitly, positivly, recommend yes, maybe!      Woodbutcher

leader/tippet question

I guess it depends on what you are using. If you have purchased a knotless tapered leader (which seems most common around here anyway), you don't really need to tie on additional tippet unless you have cut it back enough times so that you are getting into the tapered portion of the tippet. If you are using a furled or braided leader, you need to add tippet to the end of the leader in order to tie on your flies.
