Birthday paradigm
« on: April 10, 2008, 01:17:04 PM »
I just picked up the overrun 140 grain 7mm bullets from Midway. $15 per hundred. The order info says spitzer, but the 500 they sent me are all Boat tail. Just thought some of you 7mm shooters might want to take advantage of it. I loaded up some for my TCU, so I'll see how they work out in a couple days if the weather holds. Heck, I'll probably still shoot if I have to get soaked: just means less other guys on the range to wait for.
So here's my question:  my birthday is coming up and I'm going to sell a mini 14 to buy a new project. I've been looking at encores for a couple of months now, but I have a predicament. I just got my 7mm set up for my contender.  I also have a 3030 barrel. so what caliber do I need to punch paper and the occasional varmint?I was thinking about something flat shooting like a 25-06, but I know y'all have some better suggestions. I'd like something that I can find or make brass for easily. cheap to shoot is a plus. Thanks for any help.

A boat tail is what you ordered. Spitzer refers to the nose type on the bullet. A spitzer can still be a boat tail.   KN

Well a early "Happy Birthday" to ya!!  Since you have all those 7mm bullets already, you might want to consider getting the Encore with a 7mm-08 barrel.  Brass is available or easily made from 308's and my barrel loves 140gr bullets.  Another option would be a 7mmBR.  If you want a different "smaller bore" you have plenty of options, my son and I are going to have custom 223 barrels made up for shooting 55-70gr bullets, we figure it will reach out to the 500-600yd range.  I also have a 22BR barrel by Bullberry, and 22 K-Hornet that is extremely accurate.  Good luck with your search for the perfect barrel.

Thanks for the clarification and suggestion.
A 7mm-08 would make a nice addition, I don't have a rifle chambered for that. My dad is a big fan of the 250 and 300 savage, so those barrels will definitely come later, I was thinking about ordering one of those custom.
