M1A ejection
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:45:02 PM »
For years I've had an M1A and have never had this problem.

Last summer I cleaned the barrel and gas tube then wiped the breach and bolt face with a Hoppe's damped cloth. Today I fired it and it leaves a dent in the brass. Any ideas?

What area of the case is being damaged?

The dent is 1/4"  before the taper of the bottleneck and about 1/16"  across. I don't see any brass marks on the reciever or charging handle.

Please, tell us a little more about your problem? What brand of rifle, ammo, or parts are you using here? Have you changed the load or brass? Powder or any other component?

Could it be that after you cleaned the gas tube your bolt is operating at a bit higher velocity causing the case to do a 180 upon ejection, striking the receiver somewhere behind the ejection port? Sounds logical to me--------FWIW.

The rifle in question is a Springfield Armory M1A Basic shooting Win. 7.62 made by IMI, I believe. Also using Rem./ U.M.C. and they all do it.

That could be it. I guess I'll have to find some one to watch it fire and maybe see what the brass does.

Thank you.
