the Wolf takes one home
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:57:54 AM »
walking out to my hunting spot I bumped 3 deer. I knew they would hang around so I continued on. got to my spot and not 2 minutes later a small doe walks out where I came in. too dark to shoot. about 1/2 hour later I looked to my right and another walked right past me at 30 feet I didn't see. At 7:20am I saw a big doe come out of the brush at about 100 yards; walking straight at me. she caught my wind as it was swirling around in the willow bottom. she looked right at me with the Wolf raised and cocked for almost 2 minutes. I couldn't hold it up any longer and slowly lowered it. I knew she was going to bound off at any second. she turned and I bleated to stop her. about 75 yards and the Wolf barked. I checked where she had been standing and found nothing. not giving up, I followed her tracks in the snow. about 25 feet and I found a small clump of hair with just a drop of blood. still not giving up  I followed the tracks another 20 yards and  found a drop of blood. things are looking up. another 30 yards or so and now there's blood on every stick and clump of brush. I had to literally get on my hands and knees to crawl through the thicket following her trail. found her piled up within 15 feet. I was shooting Hornady 245 gr sabots with 80 grs of T7 loose and hit her right above the heart taking out both lungs; right exactly where I was aiming. I really like this Wolf ML. It's small/light and very accurate

Nice shooting.  Glad you was able to recover your deer.  Does make nice roast!

Was you using the stock sights or optics?  I was handling more Wolfs and Optimas today and I think a TruGlo reddot on the Wolf would make for a handy carbine.

What is your max range, you think, on that load?  Have you considered going down to 180 gr XTPs for a flatter shot and less recoil?

the rifle is stock right off the shelf. at the range I was able to shoot minute of deer(about 3"-4") out to 130 yds. but thats off a rest and bench. off hand shooting I limit myself to 100yds and less. with more shooting to break it in, it might get better.
recoil is nothing with this load. of course it was 15 degrees this morning and being bungled up and shooting at a deer! at 100yds it's around 1/1/2"-2"

Thanks.  I was thinking of getting one for the Oldest Princess.  This load is a good starting point.

I'm curious if you had complete passthrough with that 245 hornady since there was lack of blood.  Then again, in similar fashon I shot a doe with one of my 600gr conicals back in Oct.  Although I got both lungs and good blood where she was hit, most of her bleeding was internal.  Only went maybe 50 yds, but very very little blud trail.

Anyways, congrats on makin meat!

I thought the same thing after seeing where she was hit. just sprinkles of blood on the ground but the brush was covered with it where she rubbed against it. Almost all the blood was internal

I love a good ML success story. My brother picked up a Wolf for his son to use this week end. He is using some full bore conical that came with the gun with 100 grains of Pyrodex, it is accurate on paper.

I'm going to be using the CVA Wolf during the next two weeks here in Indiana. I'll be using 80gr of the Blackhorn 209 powder and 295gr powerbelt aerotip bullets. This shoots real well out of the Wolf and I'm only going to be shooting out to maybe 80 yards at the most. I like that the gun is easy to handle and is accurate....

I have had real good luck with my Wolf.  They will shoot minute of deer out of the box, but once broke in and seasoned correctly, they will enter a whole new dimension.  Shoot it lots with some cheap conicals clean it well every 3-5 shots.  After that session break it down and snd suck up HOT (about boiling if possible) soapy (dawn dish soap) water through wearing leather gloves as it gets hot and that's what you want.  When it is still hot as heck run a few patches covered with bore butter down it.  This will season the bore similar to how an iron skillet gets seasoned.  I took this tip from an old muzzle loading guru, and my Wolf shoots like a dream now.  I shoot 245 grn Powerbelts over 90 grns of Pyrodex and hit 1-2" groups at 100 meters and can reliably his a 6" gong at 200 meters.  Got to love that!
