Strong scope for a 475 linebaugh BFR?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:26:58 AM »
Anyone have any input on a scope that can take the beating this gun puts out, just got it back from magnum research, they drilled/tapped/mounted my Weigand mount, and I will be using a 4 ring(also weigand) setup.  Have heard good, and bad about the burris with the posi lock, and the same about the bushnell 3200.  any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As a real die hard for top quality glass on all my firearms I had to step back to some brands I normally would never buy for the bigger specialty pistols because they just hold up better than the name brand scopes do.   I've used the Tasco Pro Class fixed and variable power scopes on my heaviest handcannons for years without ever damaging one, and I have a bunch of them on hand.   Top dog in my handcannons was a 416 Rigby Encore, it wore a TPC 6X and I shot some pretty nasty loads in it.   I've shot all the JDJ's and Super Bowers for years too.   Between four 375JDJ barrels alone thousands of rounds loaded hot couldn't hurt the TPC's.   Problem is the TPC is long discontinued.   Also had great luck on the JDJ's with the Simmons Gold Medal, but it's also a discontinued model.   Of the two I prefer the TPC though, by a large margin.   While I use mostly Burris on all of the tamer pistols, I personally don't like or use their posi-lock.   Probably not much help, but has been my experience.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

A Leupold 4X is my preference, but a Leupold 2X is also satisfactory  if most of your hunting is in heavily wooded terrain.

For hunting with a handgun with that much power I would recommend the Leupold 2X fixed. The field of view is small compared to rifle scopes and targets are a lot harder to find. A 2X will give you a point of aim good enough to kill deer size animals past the range your gun will shoot accurately. I have had 4 Burrius handguns scopes, I had trouble with all but 1. I buy nothing but Leupold scope any more. At present I have about 30 of them. I have them on rifles from .22 rimfire to a .411 Hawk. On handguns I have them from .22 rimfire to a 500 S&W. I have a 2 1/2 x 8 on a .357 max. barrel for an Encore. Great shooter and has taken my last 4 deer, but you must shoot it from a rest.

My .02 cents.

For heavy recoiling handguns, stay with a fixed power scope.  I have a Burris posi-lock and a 4-12 adjustable. Have used them both on a 460 XVR and have not had any problems with either.  From all that I have read and all the shooting I have done.  I believe if you stay with a name brand maker in a fixed magnification, you and the scope will be  happy.  By the way, put as much thought into the rings as the scope.  One wont work with out the other.  Leupold and Warne are the only ones I use (rings that is).
