.204 how far from rifling's
« on: April 10, 2008, 04:56:38 AM »
How far from rifling's do you seat the bullet on .204?  Do you have different lengths for heavy loads?  I heard everything from .010 or less.  Also some say if MAX .020 must.
Currently with .32 V-Max my rifling's touch at 2.285.  I will appreciate any suggestions.

Most rifle shoot best with the bullet about 0.032 inches off the lands. I recommend you start there and gradually move closer in 0.005 increments watching for pressure signs. The bullet should not have an engagement less than 1/2 the diameter of the bullet ~0.1 inches.

Have fun

It looked like a good compromise between the recommended COL and touching the lands, which wasn't possible and still have good neck tension. It shoots well under 1" with a near max load of BL-C2, so it works for me!! ;D

Okay that brings up another question.  How important to accuracy is the C.O.L.  I heard closer to the lands the more accurate.

Just depends, I normally achieve great accuracy just off the lands .005" to .015", but if the throat is too deep to do that, loading closer to or at the SAAMI recommended COL works too. Having good bullet pull and little to no runout is more important IMO.  ;)

Bullet pull is related to neck tension and how deeply the bullet is seated in the case, a boat tail bullet seated shallow will have less bullet pull than a flat base bullet seated to the same depth due to less contact.

Runout is how straight the bullet is in the case, if the bullet starts out with a bit of yaw, it's not going to be as accurate as if would be if it starts out straight down the bore.

If you want some real accuracy, load 10-15thou into the lands. That is the way I load most of my rifles. It seats the bullets most concentric and gives them a straight start. This is not a new convention, alas it increases the pressure some by some 7000psi so you need to make an allowance in the powder charge.

Fred, you're forgetting this is the Handi forum, unlike a bolt action with some leverage to get the round chambered,  loading .010"-.015" into the lands will likely prevent the action from locking up good, you might get away with .005", but even then it might affect lock up and thus accuracy. :-\

No I have not forgotten that this is a Handi forum. I load both my two Handi's as above. No problem. You just don't load max loads.
But this is an advanced loading technique and requires some understanding of whats going on, and it is not rocket science. Reduce your powder charge by a 1/2 gr and give it a try. Loading a bullet on or into the lands will increase the chamber pressure but not by very much, with a Handi load of 54000psi with a 1/ 2 gr reduction will put you in the right place. Even without a reduction of powder wont put you in trouble but you may have sticky cases. So that should tell you to cut back a bit.

Might have to give it a try, although it won't be in my .204. :-\

Less than a 1/2" with three shots with the 257 Roberts Handi and a 100 gr
bullet at at 3150ft and a 55gr BT at 3500 in the  6x47 Handi grouping 3/8".
Both bullets are loaded 10-15 Thou into the lands.

The pressure is the practically the same whether you load 10 or 25Thou into the lands or when touching the lands.

There is one problem if you force the bullet too far into the lands. You may pull
out the bullet if you have to unload a live shell if the neck friction is minimal.

Please note that both barrels are rebored and and cut rifled with perfect bore dimensions and bore finish unlike a factory button rifled bore.
