Range Report: Varget and 25-06
« on: April 15, 2008, 02:39:49 PM »
I finally got around to shooting the Handi 25-06 and my reloads today. The loads were Nosler Partitions in Federal once fired brass that was neck sized and Federal primers. Trim to 2.486 and COL at 3.085
These dimensions are the same as factory Federal 115 NPs. Several loads between 37 and 39 grains of Varget shot fairly well with the 39.0 the best of that bunch.
The best load was 40 grains and it is very near the same POI as the factory Partition loads I have been hunting with. Here's the group shot with 40 gr. I only had 3 loaded at this weight but I will be well supplied the next time.

I will load up a bunch more at 40 and some on each side for the next trip. Looking pretty good so far.
Varget it doing well in my .223, 22-250, and definitely has good potential as a hunting load for the 25-06

Not to bad, but I'd try 5 shot groups and see how it measures if it were me.......

Lots of folks love Varget!

Looks like you have a bullet / powder combo that will work , i tried Varget with Speer and Sierra's with just so-so results in my 25/06 , the 100gr and 120gr Speers do well with IMR4227 and the 87gr Sierras do well with H4895 . I may have to try the Nosler / Varget combo .

Thanks Guys.
The bad news is that the 75 grain Vmaxs didn't do so well with Varget.
The best was way low from my 115gr factory deer hunting load as well as the 40 gr NP115 reloads. The best group size was about 1.5" and it was 6" lower than the 115s.
I will likely give up on that load as the .223 and 22-250 will handle the varmints and target shooting duties well and I don't want to have to do that kind of scope adjusting or guestimating in order to shoot both in the 25. Besides, this is a fine deer barrel and I took a 10 pointer this last season at 296 yards with the factory partitions. Soooooo...I ain't messing with that too much.

Stimpy, do you notice anything familiar about that 3 shot group with a Handi in 25-06?
