What would you recomend - Taurus, RI ?? 45 Super conversion.
« on: April 17, 2008, 06:24:24 AM »
I have a custom 1911 converted to 45 Super and now want to build one for my son. Need a good starter platform. I am considering the Taurus but there are some others out there. Armscore maybe. Would appreciate any info or suggestions. What about Charles Daly?
Don't have a huge budget to work with. Thanks in advance. - F50

I think the RIA and Charles Daly come from the same place.I have a RIA no complaints at all starting to up grade grips first then it will be sights, trigger hammer and on and on.
Good gun for the money.

Were I making that choice, I'd go with the Taurus. It already has all the bells and whistles that most folks end up putting on an entry level 1911 anyway, and probably less expensive in the long run. It also has a forged frame and slide, in case that matters to you.

Went with the Taurus for all the reasons Savage mentioned. Comes with full length guide rod, good trigger, sear, ambi safety, etc. Dealer cost $454 plus $35 overnight S&H. Adding 28# Wolff recoil spring, extra power Fp spring, Titanium FP, and Super Tuff buffers. Should make a great sidearm for bear country. Also adding Hogue wrap around rubber grips with finger grooves. Should make a 25 year old very happy.

I think you made a good choice Fanner. Congrats!!!! I worked the action on a few and they seem very solid. Let us know how it turns out.

I bought one of the PT1911s when they first became available in my area. Around a year or so ago. I have nothing negative to say about it, other than the finish could be better.

I woud go with the Rock Island, I have their plain jane model, nice gun.  They make a upper grade type with fancy stuff on it, if you want.  The Taurus guns have been so poor in the steel, timing and overall quality issues for many years.  Poor customer service, as well.

Fanner, I would lose the titanium fp.  I know of no gunsmith who uses them and I did install one anyway. I has several misfires. IF you are going to use this for bear protection you don't want misfires

SharonAnne - Odd ya should mention it. I have been having misfire troubles with my AMT with Titanium FP. Put the one in the Taurus and 3rd round misfired so went back to factory FP and have had no malfunctions. Put 4 misfires in a mag and ran them through the Taurus - bang bang bang bang - ordered a SS FP for the AMT today. Anybody wants a Titanium FP with very little use or no use at all I have 4 of them cheap.

SharonAnne - that's an interesting bit of information and I'm glad you raised it.  You have steered me away from a tp.  I had wondered what the rage was about them, whether they lasted longer, stayed true, held greater tensile strength, but I wonder if it might be just a lightweight cure to a problem that probably didn't really exist.  I really don't know.

The important thing is that yours is sitting on your bench.  Thanks.  Mikey.

SharonAnn - All though I am new to 1911 work I am the gunsmith. There are so many options in this industry some times ya just have to try things. Thanks for the heads-up. Ya helped me fix a problem that might have taken a long time to figure out. - Fanner50

when the titanium trigger group parts became available i HAD to have them. after all they were lighter and  lighter HAS to be better; faster lock time, high speed hammer strike, and of course the COOL of having UNOBTANIUM!!!

i had the total package in Ti. firing pin, hammer, strut, mainspring cap. and for all my effort (in spite of my gunsmiths recommendations) what did i get for my trouble?!?! MISFIRES. how did i cure them? steel firing pin, steel hammer. the Ti hammer sits beside the firing pin.

Fanner, you are welcome.:)  Mikey, we ARE here to share the wealth so to speak, of our experiences. We learn by experience. Sometimes we learn by the experience of others.

I bought a rock island to build on after shooting it a few times i put on night sights and grips and called it done great trigger and very accurate right out of the box feeds and fires anything you put in the mag. including semi wad cutter reloads.
