The Blackhawk feels lighter than the Redhawk and fits my hand better.  I have 1 Redhawk and about 6 Blackhawks...  What feels best to you?  Both are good hunting guns.

Excellent Point,
When you are at that gunshop, take the time to evaluate the balance, pointablitiy, and sight picture of those different models as you will probably like one better than another.

Bill,
I personally prefer the Black Hawks, but as Dusty said, get the one that feels the best to you. I would recommend that if you are considering putting a scope on it that you buy a gun that comes from the factory set up for a scope. Also like Dusty, I have 5 of the old 3 screw Black Hawks and 1 Super Red Hawk. Make sure you check out the new Super Black Hawk Hunter model, sweet.

Better than just holding them, shoot them if you can. I wanted a Redhawk for years. Finally got one, and it was punishing to shoot. Felt good holding it, but it hurt the web of my thumb and beat my middle finger to death. Traded it for another .44 Bisley. For hunting, and shooting of any kind, I like the single actions best.

since this is for hunting only i'd go with a stainless steel, single action Super BlackHawk.   it can be had for less than $500, with tax on top of that, if you will shop for one.   the double action Ruger will cost you at least $70 more, with tax on top of that, i'd guess.   and you still would have a (double action) revolver that you'd probably fire in the single-action mode.     the SBH can be outfitted with Hogue's MonoGrip and you'll probably see even better accuracy (more consistent hand-to-grip placement and recoil reduction will account for this) than with factory grips.   if you get the 5 1/2" barrel you'll have great adjustability of the rear sight (i had to work on it on a 71/2" barrel'd one with a dremel to get it proper!) and a decent sight radius.   with good eyesight you can hit an 8 1/2'' by 11'' piece of paper at 100 yards with Ruger's iron sights on their 5 1/2" Super BlackHawk.

i've shot both of them, single and double-action.   the single is a simpler, potentially more reliable mechanism, with a great track record for accuracy, power, and reliability.

take care,

Safetysheriff, You're right about that, I shoot my srh single action when hunting. The double action frame just fits me better.

i like them both and hunt with both. Only redhawk i have left is the one i just got back from dustin linebaugh. He chopped it to 3.5 inch put differnt sights on it and roundbutted it. Its a compact little gun but still is probably heavier then a 7.5 inch super blackhawk. Its easier to holster but still a good ammount of weight on your belt all day. If i had to go down to one gun it woud no doubt be a 4 5/8s stainless super blackhawk. there light enough compact enough and are an easy shooting gun when it comes to recoil and is powerful enough to take care of about any hunting chore if loaded properly.

Single Action.   :D  How often is double action going to be used for hunting?  You'd want the steady short squeeze of SA trigger for a better shot rather than the long DA pull and the inherant wiggle that goes with it.  Ok, I'm also not a big fan of DA's anyways but love the Ruger SA's.  ;D

I have a RH, SRH, and I like my Bisley the best.  44 mag/  Seems to fit my hand the best with less felt recoil
Do what the others said and check out what feels best in your hand. Good luck.

if you are using for accurate shooting you will want to tock it first any way, so the single action is likely the best.

I've never heard anyone else mention this before so maybe it's just me, but when I shoot a DA, we're talking S&W here, whenever I alter my stance in any way the gun shoots off. First noticed this when shooting from the barracade for law enforcement qualification. But then I found that any variation in the way I hold a DA makes the gun shoot off. The SA revolver is immune to that for me. I can take any kind of rest or position I want even touch the gun itself to a rest and the SA just plunks them into the same group. This is all with high velocity 38 special loads, I suppose that a 44 mag would be more sensitive to the way you hold it. For this reason I would consider only the single action. Also the SA is easier on your hands in recoil. I would also recommend a good size barrel for hunting, not only for the higher velocity, but because 6 or 7.5 inch barrels are easier to shoot straight. I've shot every thing from 2.5 to 7.5 inch guns, and for me longer is easier to shoot straight, and when you are hunting shooting straight is everything.

Lloyd I did just that today.  Here is a likeness of the one I just put on hold until my check comes in later this week or early next week, as mine does not have the fluted cylinder.

Which ever one you shoot best. Single or double doesnt matter for hunting, I've never shot one double action when hunting.
