I need a powder recomendation
« on: April 18, 2008, 03:02:58 PM »
I have run into a little problem and I hope one of you has the answer.

I am getting ready to work up some handloads for a 357 Herrett in a 14" contender barrel.

The Sierra loading manual calls for H4227 which is discontinued.  SO I went on a hunt for IMR 4227 which I am told is the standard substitute.  Well I am having a hard time finding that locally as well.  I can order it but for working up a load I would just as soon buy a can locally as to pay the shipping for one can.

Do any of you have a good recommendation for a powder to try instead of these two for the 357 Herrett?

Thanks,

Ray

Alliant 2400 will work with light projectiles.
But I've always used IMR4227.....so I guess that isn't much help.  Where are you located?

Thanks Scott,

I'm about a half hour south of St Louis.  Today I bought 140 Gr. Hornady xtps and 158 gr. Sierra Jacketed Hollow points.

Maybe one of those weekend road trips to MidwayUSA just to the west of you, never now what you can pick up when you get there ::)

With those projectiles, you really need to get some 4227 shipped to you, or maybe you can get together with another 'like-minded' handloader and split the cost of the hazmat fee?
