That's how it goes sometimes. Go figure.
You can hunt super hard for days and nothing, then something like that happens.

It may have heard your commotion with the tent and thought it was a hen flying down from the roost. He could have covered a lot of ground and not seen you get into the pop-up.  Who knows?

Good story, and yes, a strange hunt

Just like deer hunting. I've had a couple of deer walk right up on me while I was setting up and usually my gun or bow is leaning against a tree.

I do know about strange.   One cold fall morning we were doing a turkey hunt and were not successful at finding any birds.   My buddy had his shotgun and I had my 50 cal muzzleloader.   We made it back to the truck and set our guns in the truck.   I unzipped my oversuit and was relieving myself on a tree,  my buddy was on the other side of the truck pouring coffee out of the thermos.

All of a sudden his eyes got real big and he said "do you have your rifle by you?"  I said no and he said look behind you.......

I turned and looked over my shoulder to see a large 8 pt buck walking calmly behind two fat does no more than 30 yds behind the truck.   The three of them bolted as soon as I took a step towards my rifle.

Hunting is unpredictable but I enjoy every minute spent out in the woods.
