.22/30 caliber saboted rounds?
« on: April 24, 2008, 03:18:12 PM »
I can remember these (30/30 and others) from years back but, don't see them anymore? I think Remington marketed them? Anybody have experiences with these?

The accelerator.  55gr 22cal  in a 30 cal sabot.

I took a buck with one about 7 or 8 years ago.  35 yards.  Dropped like a hammer.

However, I, and a lot of other people, had bad luck with them at longer ranges (notoriously inaccurate).  May not be good for varminting in a factory mode (don't believe they are commercially produced anymore regardless), but I understand someone was making sabot reloading kits if you were feeling frisky enough to experiment.  I imagine the twist of the barrel would affect these more than anything.

You can find the Sabots on Ebay I think, I tried some, you can get near 5,000 fps out of a 30-06, but I could rarely hit the paper at 100 yards.  You should buy some and play with them, then you can tell people the same thing I do.  Larry

I may still have some around here, never loaded them. I had several friends that played with them years back and no one could get any accuracy at 100 yrds. so I never bothered playing with them.

Tried some in a 30/30 and a 308.  I hand loaded some in both calibers.  3 inch groups at 50 yds. was the about the best I could do in either rifle.  Did get a 2 inch group a couple of times.  Fired them in a Win 94 and an old military 308.  Not the most accurate rifles anyway.  My 2 cents worth is that its not worth the effort, especially hand loading.  I don't know about factory rounds even if you could get some.  Maybe fun to toy around with but, I'm not trying anymore.

Funny how muzzle loading sabots retain some accuracy at range, (if I recall correctly, even saboted artillery rounds did OK), but they couldn't get this little dude to do better than it does.

I'm still curious about the twists of guns tried.

Maybe the difference is that the smaller ones have a very thick sabot, and the bigger ones have a thinnier sabot?

I tried them in my nef 30-06. Loaded hot and light. Never hit the paper at........25 yards!!!!!!!! Decided anything that needed that much attention and powder work up was not worth it.Especially now with the price of powder!

I must have been the only guy in the world that had any luck with these. I have a rem 760 IN 3006 and they shot well enough to shoot bottles out to 100 plus yards, though I never did try to put them to paper. 8)

I shot some of these out of a friends 30-30 Marlin which was a scoped 336c and 100yd clay's were very doable.
I know a couple other guys (both good shots) who tryed some in an /06...they claimed that they did very poorly.

When I was playing with them I discovered that the BT bullets would seat much better in them than a FB would, I think the seating of the bullets in Sabots probably has a lot to do with whether they shoot or not.  For the record, I could never get anything to shoot well, I did have nice little Sabot prints on some of my paper with no bullet holes to be seen.  Larry
