V-Belts
« on: May 25, 2008, 02:49:39 AM »
Had some major work done this past week. Had to hook into the city sanitary sewer system, and decided to tie into the water line as well, as I'ld probably have to do it within the next few years anyhow. So my front yard really got tore up what with 2 backhoes and a front end loader running around for 2 1/2 days.
Anyway, got my Troy built out, to try and smooth things out and put some grass seed down. As luck would have it, the tines found a piece of wire and tied things up real quick. And the V-belt was pretty much chewed up.(it had been a couple years since I replaced it anyway)
So I ran over to the local hardware store to get another. Luckily they had one in stock,(1/2x26 belt) The salesman at the store mentioned that the belt was rated for more h.p., and abuse, than the standard black belt.(this one is green)
I just thought that the color was a different manufacture. Didn't realize that there might be a rating difference. Anybody know if this is true, or was the salesman feeding me line. Price difference was only $2, so that isn't a concern. I'ld be glad to pay $2 more if the belt lasts longer.(more of a pain in the butt to change belts!!)
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I worked for a company that sold industrial belts wholesale.
Yup, them green belts are industrial grade. They have that extra cloth wrap. That gives the  higher horsepower and impact rating.
You may or may not get extra life out of them, depending on the condition of the sheaves and their alignment. In the industry they are called "green belt" and are made by different companies so if you want the best, buy Gates belts! ;)

P.S. Be sure to install ALL belts properly, don't use the farm method of flippin' 'em on with a screwdriver. It's real easy to break the wrap and or the inner cord!
