IMR4227 & H4227 versus H110 in 45 Colt (Ruger Only Loads)
« on: April 21, 2008, 02:40:01 PM »
What do you recommend in terms of primers; Magnum or Standard? I have a bunch of Winchester LP primers, which are supposed to accommodate both. Also, how does 4227 and H110 compare in terms of consistency? I am loading 250 grain XTPs, 270 SAAs and 315 Keiths in a Blackhawk. I have been using WLP primers with the new IMR4227, which is the same as the former H4227 and get lots of unburned powder. Will I get less unburned powder and lower standard deviations with a magnum primer?

You might  get less ash, but it is more a function of chamber pressure than of primer IME.  At safe .45LC pressures you will simply get more ash than in a .44 Mag or .22 Hornet.

Racer X

I'm down to using H110 for just one handgun my 41GNR , all the rest of my Mags use IMR4227 , I do not worry as much about the unburnt powder or ash as i worry about how it shoots and i get much better proformance from the 4227 as far as group size goes . Also the only one to get Mag primers is the 41 .

Funny how experiences are different for each of us.
I tried both 4227s in my 45. Between the lack of accuracy and the unburned powder, I finally gave them to a buddy who'd helped me out on some bullets. He shot them in a couple of 44s and was tickled. Win296 has come to be my powder of choice for larger bullets. No mess, no left over powder and accuracy is great. For lighter loads, I've been using Win231, Clays and Unique. I've been using Winchester Large Pistol Primers with all. They're supposed to meet Mag specifications (?) and have been doing a good job.

Does 4227 shoot cleaner when loaded near max? I am shooting IMR4227, which is the same powder as the former H4227 Extreme powder.
I shot 24.2 grains over the 250 XTP and got decent accuracy, although it was dirty. I wonder if running it hotter would clean things up?

what your seeing as unburned powder or ash with 4227 is the filler in the powder that isnt burning not the powder itself. I dont know what they use for filler in that powder but it does make it dirty. You wont totaly get rid of it even running high pressures and mag primers. Thing is the stuff to me is worth the dirtiness. It has been consistantly one of the most if not the most accurate powder in 44s and 45s. My go to accuracy load for both of my 500 linebaughs both use a 450 lfngc and 28 grains of 4227. both of them will shoot one hole groups with that load.
