Thinking about starting in Black Powder shooting but know little about it.
Might anyone have a suggestion as to a good choice for a first rifle? I prefer percussion rather than flintlock. I'm not a hunter so thinking a smaller caliber might be more accurate (??) Seems the Lyman rifles are popular but are others worth considering?
Thank you.
Ned
Sort of depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to shoot roundball only, the Lyman Great Plains Rifle is a good choice, it has a slow twist for roundballs. A .50 caliber should be plenty accurate, there is hardly any kick when using roundball, and the .50 cal won't be as vulnerable to wind drift as one of the pea shooters in .32 or .36 cal.
I have a TC Renegade, and it's accurate enough to take deer to 125 yards with a maxi ball.
