Is copper an option for cannon balls? I think i can get it free.

Copper is fetching a very high price, and with its high melting point would be very difficult to work with in a home-casting setup.

If it were me, I would trade any copper you might get for zinc, and a good steel mold.

FWIW: The Mexicans used copper cannon balls during the Mexican War of 1847-1848.

A customer of mine uses pool balls and he claims he does not have any problems.  I would start light with the powder charges though.

I know that some folks have.

I know of only one incident of a 105mm salute cannon on Ft Devens, MA that was loaded with a set of pool balls - and the squad that fired the salute the next morning didn't follow procedure and check the bore.  They carry well.  Across the parade field and took out many building and car windows.  The officer class that did the prank took up a collection for the damages.

Cool!

It certainly lends a different perspective in life considering the definitions of expressions as 'running the table' and '8 ball'.
