Decisions - 300 Whisper
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:36:07 AM »
:D

I have a choice to make, I would like some feedback. I can purchase an SSK .300 Whisper and I have a choice of barrels. I would like some feedback pro's or con's on which you think would be best. I will use this barrel for problem animal control. They are the following:

1) 14" blue contender
2) 14" SS contender
3) 16.5" blue encore

Any comments would be welcome.

I like shooting the handguns, but the 16.5" barrel would be nice in that you could use it as a carbine too.  At least for me, that would extend my effective range somewhat.  If you're limited to close range shots, this might not concern you.

I would go with an even longer carbine...

I had the 16", and I didnt really think it was as quiet as some folks claim.  It is certainly 'quieter' than lets say...30-30 or something, but the shorter barrels are of course louder.  I get quieter loads with my longer SKS loaded sub-sonic with big bullets.  I have looked into these loads quite a bit for pests in my chicken coop.  The best thing I have found is a long barreled .22 rf loaded with 22 CB ammo.  The normal CB's work great in my tube mag, and they have CB long that will work in a  clip magazine.  These are fun bullets to shoot, and definatel have enough poop for close work.  I used to have a Marlin 22 bolt rifle, and that was the quietest of all.  A single shot with a 21-22 inch barrel would be awesome.
