Whats my 1885 High Wall worth?
« on: October 14, 2004, 01:30:30 AM »
A few yrs ago I bought a NIB 1885 Browning Highwall in 45-70.
It has never been fired, only oiled, put in a bore store and locked away in my safe.
It has unusually nice wood, it was selected from the 25 examples that were in stock at the time. Its in 100% cond. with box and all paper work.
I would like to sell it, and am curious what I should ask?
Am located in So Cal.
Thanks!

Not quite enough information to quote a price.  Was it a BPCR?  There were several versions of Browning 45-70 High Walls.  Gunsamerica usually has some and they show them going anywhere from 900 to 2500 depending on features.  Does yours have an octagon bbl?  What sights?

Its not a BPCR, 1885 High Wall 45-70 Govt. with 28" octagon barrel and regular sights gold dot as I recall with gold adj. trigger. I was not aware there was that many variations on this model? This one is almost too pretty to shoot!
The wood is really something.

Unless it's truly "new in box", $1000 would probably be a little high (doesn't hurt to ask, though).  Browning made the 1885 Hi Wall in a number of calibers.  All except the "big & slow" calibers (like 45-70) had no iron sights, just provision for scope mounting.  I don't know the actual numbers, but it seems the 45-70 was the most common caliber; Browning seemed to use it for all the "commemorative" and "special edition" versions of the 1885 ... and you sometimes see some highly-engraved versions, which are deservedly more expensive.  Also, the BPCRs are a special case ... again, more expensive. More recently, there were some "Traditional Hunter" versions ... slightly different stock & sights. What you describe sounds like their "run of the mill" version of the 45-70; so I'd think it would command a price in the low end of the range.  Check GunsAmerica, under Browning Rifles (you can use the "search" function; look for "1885" and "wall" ... that should pop up all the 1885 hi wall 45-70s).  That will give you a feel for the market.  What I see there right now looks like: $795 for a used one; $950-$995 for 2 very-slightly used ones; $1200-$1495 for 2 NIBs.  There are other 45-70s listed, at higher prices, but they're "special editions", etc.  Hope this helps.

sig-210-6 I think perhaps a lot of people did not reply because they thought you were trying to sell the rifle here and not in the classified section and did not want to get involved in a dispute. It would have been a tactful way of advertising. POW

Not really trying to sell it here.
If used are selling for 850-895,
1200-1500 for NIB
I now think $1000.00 is about right.
Its never been fired, just registered in my name
and put in my safe.
I am sure I will have no problem selling it.
Wish I could post a pic, but then it would look like I
am trying to sell it here.
Thanks again.

I just saw one in a shop for $ 1,400-It had the heavy barrel, level by front globe sight and a rear tang sight. It also had never been fired.
Its worth as much as you can get. but you might try following Gun List.

sig210-6:

I have been following the prices on these guns for some time now. The model, I believe you are talking about has no receiver tangs and the rear stock mounts to the receiver by the use of a through bolt under the recoil pad.

If my assumption is correct you can still find these guns in the range of
$ 900.00 to $ 1,000.00 new in the box.

I am suprised they still sell for that low price due to the quality of the gun. It is well made and one fine rifle.

I have one in 45/70 caliber and one in 45/90. Same gun you have. I would not sell either of mine for less the $1200.00.

If you don't need the money, hang on to it. The new ones will finally be sold out and then you can get the better money for yours.

I believe the gun Swifty is refering to is the black powder gun. It has an upper and lower tang on the receiver that the stock attaches to. These guns are going for $ 1200.00 to$ 1500.00.

Hope this helps, djh

Sig

I paid $1600 for one that had been shot 20 times, had the empties and a full box loaded by the Old Western Scrounger to accompany it.  Found it on a used gun rack (in one of the few lead machine stories left in the bay area, in San Carlos, which is just south of the socialist bastion of San Francisco).  I though it was a fair price, anything less than $1500 would be a good deal for the buyer.

1885's are difficult to price.  I have a 1885 Traditional in 38-55 that I hunt with.  I am not a collector, just like them single shooters.  I saw an identical gun in a gun shop new with a hang tag for $1300!!   I did not pay anywhere near that; but since they don't make 'em if ya want one you may have to pay.  My caliber is really hard to find and is a desireable gun, but I have a few dings in the stock from hunting and it would not be as valuable to collectors.  I think I could get $900 if I pushed the issue and held out and fought off tire kickers.  Yours in 45-70 is common, but then again, they don't make them any more and that's where the value comes in.    Here is my baby:

For what it's worth (no pun intended...), I just bought a Winchester 1885 HiWall Ltd. Ed. in 45/70.  New, it was tagged at $1139, and I got 5% off for CHRISTmas which brought it down to ~ $1085.   This was at Sportsmen's Warehouse in Reno, NV....  This has a full octagon 28" barrel, and a Marble's Tang peep sight.

bought mine a couple of years ago but it was made in the 70's Iif I remember right, looked it up once.....anyway it cost $750 in a shop and was near mint...may have gotten it a little cheaper if I had found a private party...if yours is like mine it is an excellent shooter even with the open sights....just my thoughts...WW1

The last HW I saw at the local gun store had $1250 marked on it as best as I recall. It sat for at least a couple of months before disappearing. I can't say for sure what it sold for but as long as it sat likely less than what was marked on it but then I can't be sure of that since I don't know who bought it. To the best of my knowledge guns of this sort you have just haven't really got any collector value and their only value is as a shooter.

The BPCR and other target types went for a good deal more than the one you have. I had one of them prior to getting my BPCR and even tho it as as new when I let it go I took a heavy loss on it. They are nice guns it's just that no one seems to want them. If I recall correctly from mine it didn't have a top tang for mounting a tang peep sight which most users of them seem to want. You can either use it with the rather crude buckhorn rear or mount a scope and not a lot of folks are really into scoping them.

I think that really was what killed the market for the type you have and I had once years ago. It just isn't quite what folks want.

The pictures are those of the early, standard version of the M-1885, with the normally good Browning wood,  from about 1986-90 or so.  A check of the serial number will verify the production date.
Some will have wood several grades above that pictured, but it's a chancy thing.

Although all are rising in value, they are doing so very slowly, because the basic gun is still in production, and Browning made a gazillion of them - in other words, they're not hard to find, and if one's priced too high, it won't sell.

[I paid $695.00 foor mine 1 year ago.]

mountaingoat is essentially still correct, for that basic model. allowing for inflation.

I also paid $700 a year ago, but the one I bought was not the basic model - it was the much later .45-70  Traditional Hunter w/issue Marbles Tang sight, etc.
Yes, I got a deal - the TH should have cost me over $1K at the time - but I bought it as a dealer, since I was working the gun show as a favor for an FFL that day, using his FFL, and what goes around, comes around.

Thanks! I bought a Traditional Hunter oil finish w/issue Marbles Tang sight for my son in 44 mag.
It was less than this 45-70 at the time. (btw, I gave the SN minus the last 2)
Will see what happens.
Posted for sale on another forum.
Sounds like you got a good deal at the gun show!
Great! ;)

Yes the basic gun is still being produced by Miruko in Japan annual and issued in various chamberings mostly under the Winchester name recently but some others have come out with the Browning name as well. I think the current one is a HW .22-250 which is the one I mentioned I saw recently listed at $1250 NIB. As long as it stayed on the shelf I seriously doubt it sold for that price.

Even if unfired once it's been owned by an individual it can't be said to be new. It can be said to be as new but not new which technically means never before owned by an individual or sold by a dealer.

Guns all guns just as with all other things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. You might luck up and find someone who wants one so badly they'll pay $2000 just to get their hands on one rat now. But I think a honest fair price between an informed buyer and an informed seller is likely less than $1000 on it. How much less I honestly don't know. Were I in the market which I really am not I doubt I'd go over $750-$800 for one even if unfired and as new in box. There just isn't any collector interest in them I'm aware of to drive the price up so it's shooter value only and quite honestly the type you have and I had just don't seem to have much shooter interest. I tired of mine pretty quickly and got a BPCR instead. Now if someone wanted to scope it for hunting it would do nicelly for that but there does not appear to be a very wide interest in doing that with the .45-70s.

Good luck on your sale. You may post it here on the General Classifieds as well so long as it's not on an auction site. To use the Classifieds here you must be free to sell it immediately to a prospective buyer who says "I'll take it" if it's on an auction site you cannot.
