I too am a 270 nut. At the current time I have five, all model 70 WINCHESTERS except one is a custom 28" BULLBERRY ENCORE. Virtually any weight bullet of the right construction will do a fine job on deer size game if put in the right place. The same can be said for many many calibers of which I own and have used with great success. Two of the longest shots I have ever taken in my life were with my 1953 model 70 shooting WINCHESTER 130gr POWER POINT PLUS with a SIMMONS 4x12 WHITETAIL CLASSIC scope. Both were measured shots. One was 487 yds and the other was 517 yds. Yes there is no reason to take shots at that distance except the fact I was only 15 or 16 at the time and didn't know any better. They were both one shot kills. One instant drop and the other one ran maybe 35yds, both with shoulder shots. Just this past season I tried the long shot one more time with my newer model 70 in 270WSM with a one shot kill at 505 yds using WIN 130 BT. I don't care for the BTs but the gun loves them! There was a fairly strong crossing wind from left to right, aimed for the shoulder and hit the neck. Most of my shots are under 300 yds. By the way I was 15 or 16 at the time, I am now 50 and still useing the 270 along with my new found love of the last severial years, THE 45/70!!!

I too have a long history with the 270. My first bolt action big game rifle was a 1971 Remington BDL in 270. It was an outstandingly accurate rifle. I loaded it hot using Jack O'connors load of 62 grains of surplus H4831 and the 130 grain Winchester Hollow point available at the time. Using this rifle in east Texas where a long shot was 75 yards I found out two things, one the load killed like lightning, two it sure was hard on deer. I then loaded the 150 grain Speerr bullet on top of 57.5 grains of H4831 and found I had a great deer load and a satisfactory elk load. I shot the barrel out in less than ten years, this is one rifle I wish I had rebarreled instead of trading off. I have owned and used several 270's since and the 150 grain load is the one I still use though I might substitute the 150 grain Partition.
