spring time return of geese
« on: March 01, 2008, 03:21:41 PM »
It shouldn't be long now that we will be hearing that familiar honking above. Here it's usually around the end of march or early April. When do you start seeing them in your area?
 Just curious.

We still have a few hanging around here.  I went to the lake last weekend and saw 10-15 of the big guys.  I also saw about 500 ducks taking a rest stop.  Mostly they were pintails, widgeon, mallards and even a Canvasback.  Ducks were everywhere on their way back north or still here from winter, not sure which.  Cans are pretty rare around here so it was good to see one of those.

I went back yesterday to see if there were any more but never made it.  My trucks front end went out about a mile from the PHA.

Not a good day.

Not geese but I went turkey scouting today and saw (and heard) hundreds of Sandhill Cranes flying north.  It is amazing how high they fly and how loud they can be.

Still hoping to get one someday.  Each year I get closer, maybe a shot next fall.

Finally seeing some geese around.I talked with an agent from  the US Fish and Wildlife service last week,he told me that Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge ,here in Saginaw county, has some 50 pairs of geese already. I hope we have a good spring for the birds.  ;D

Blue Wing teal are usually the last to migrate and they are here in Oklahoma by large numbers.  I have been chasing Tommy three toes the last few days and have seen hundreds of these guys in the flooded fields.  Can't wait until the second weekend of September for early teal season when these guys are flying back south.   ;D

yep, blue wings are great eating and great gunning,,but they are usually gone from here by the time our duck season opens up in October. :(  . However we have the green wings until freeze up, usually in Late November/early December.
They come zipping in like rockets just over the cattails and take you by surprise almost every time....LOL.
