gp100 cylinder throat and cast bullets
« on: April 05, 2008, 03:33:57 PM »
Not sure is this is the right forum but here goes.

I have an 357 Accusport Bisley that is almost too accurate for a revolver and the throat size is 358

I just bought a Gp100 and the throats are a bit smaller.  I push a 357 jacketed bullet through and it is a slight snug fit.  It takes gentle pressure to push through.  I slugged the bore and it is smaller than the throats.  I am just getting into casting my own bullets and plan on shooting cast most of the time if not all the time.  I would like to shoot the same size cast in both revolvers just to make it easier.  I can't even push the cast 358 through.

Should I open up the GP100 to the same throat size as the Accusport?  Accuracy for cast shouldn't change I think.  Perhaps accuracy would change for jacketed but I don't think I mind.  I can't afford to shoot them anyways.

Recommendations?

30h, since you WANT a bullet .001 or so LARGER than the bore .I'd try some before I did any thing to the gun. You did not say what the bore diameter is. IF the bore is 357 and the cast bullets are .358, you should have no problems. Lead is a lot softer than jacketed ammo and should go down the bore o.k.!

My GP100 Shoots .358 cast bullets like a dream. Never measured the throat, and never had any lead build up problems.

I talked to Ruger awhile back about GP-100 factory specs and they told me the following:

Throat Diameter: .358" to .360"
Groove Diameter: 356" to .358"

My gun is on the lower end of these tolerances with .358" throats and .356" groove. I shoot the .358" cast bullets and they do ok.
