Got a couple more new Remingtons on the way.
« on: May 05, 2008, 05:50:59 PM »
In addition to the Model Seven 25th Anniversary Edition 7-08 I picked up earlier this year I have a couple more on the way that are supposed to arrive on Thursday.

I've order a M700 SPS Varmint in .223 Remington and a Model Seven Predator in the new .17 Remington Fireball. Rich at Mueller has me a Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 scope on the way that I'll mount on the M700 SPS and I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21 on the way from Midsouth Shooters Supply to go on the Predator. Both will be mounted on Weaver bases and Burris Signature Vee Rings.

I was able to find cases or at least supposedly so at the Woodchuck Den for the .17 Fireball. They promised to ship them out Wednesday as they are supposed to arrive tomorrow at their shop. They are the ONLY place I've checked with that claimed to be able to deliver them but then they are the small bore specialists.

GB you make me jealous. I can't speak for the model 7 but that SPS Varmint should be a real tack driver for sure. I have yet to hear a bad range report on an SPS. I myself would not mind trying out that 17 fireball. I wonder what kind of range they are good for on Groundhogs? Good luck with the new additions. Dale

My o' my ... you got it goin' on right now. Remingtons in 7mm-08, .223, and .17 Fireball ... new scopes ... now that's what I call a "great" year. Out of those, I only own rifles in the .223 caliber out of those three but it is a great round in my opinion. The 7mm-08 is next on my list and I'll need you to educate me on the .17 Fireball as I am not familiar with it at all.

Congratulations and keep this thread going as I am interested in hearing about how each one performs. What are your plans for the .17?

I been checking into the 17 Rem. Fireball a little. Looks like it might be ok for Groundhogs out to about 300 or 350 yards. Here is what I came up with using 25 grain Hornady VMAX bullets. All you have to do is click on the picture to make larger. I could not find any load data so I went with 4,000 FPS like remington says it does. Dale

The new .17 Fireball is really nothing more than the old wildcat .17 Mach IV tamed by Remington and made into a factory round. It's the .221 Fireball case necked down to .172". I have 200 cases for it on order from the Woodchuck Den and 100 rounds of factory ammo on order from Able Ammo. Those are the only places I could locate online that had the ammo and cases for the round in stock at this time. I think the dealer I ordered the rifles from has a couple boxes of ammo on the way as well.

It's really about 250 fps or so behind the .17 Remington. The Predator has what Remington calls their Magnum contour barrel it's not a full bull varmint type really but is fluted to help a little in cooling it down. I chose the Fireball for the smaller powder capacity and more metal due to the smaller diameter hole to hopefully allow more shooting before the barrel gets too hot.

I really like the feel of the model seven predator; there's been on sitting in the rack at Sportsmans for about a month chambered in 22-250.  I almost bought it but the barrel wasn't free floated so I decided against it.  Let us know how your's shoots Bill,  I wouldn't mind having one in 17 or 204 for a calling rig and walking gun.

The store where I'm getting mine has a .22-250 and a .243 both on the rack but neither was what I wanted but I did like the rifle so decided on the .17.

I picked up the two new rifles today and asked him if he thought he could get me an XR-100 in .22-250 and match the price another dealer has on one in .223 he said he was pretty sure he could so I might have yet another new one on the way to me next week.

The Mueller APV 4.5-14 scope showed up today as did the Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Mueller was actually a tad shorter than the Bushnell which is pretty compact for its power range. Over all size of the two is very nearly identical.

Yesterday I got a call from a rep from Bushnell and I think I have an Elite 4200 6-24 side focus scope and an Elite 1500 rangefinder on the way as well so it seemed only right to order up an XR-100 to put it on.

Last week the new Lock, Stock & Barrel catalog got here.  I just checked it for .17 Fireball brass.  It isn't listed.  I suppose they will carry it sooner or later.

They do have plenty of Die sets for it from Hornady and RCBS.

I found it listed at lots of places but no one had it in stock except the Woodchuck Den. It got here from them quickly and their price was about the same as all the others plus they actually had it. Same with the ammo really the only place who seemed to actually have it in stock was Able Ammo and their price really was the lowest I've seen from anyone at $22.34 per box. Still not cheap but cheaper than the rest. I'm still waiting on it to arrive so cannot yet comment on their service.

I was surprised Rem. came out with the 17 Fireball, considering they have the 17 Rem...  But i guess something "new" always helps sales, at least for a while...

I bought a 17 Rem. back when they came out, and shot thousands of rounds through it.  I really liked it at the time, but i can't say i was all that impressed with it's performance.  I always thought it really ran out of poop after about 250 yards...

I was using it on a job where i had been hired to clean out some dog packs, so perhaps i was expecting a bit too much out of it.

Where i really enjoyed it, i was using it to shoot sparrows, cow birds and starling at long range, it was really impressive when you hit one dead center.

Graybeard,

When you get them set up please post a picture or 2.  I'd like to see the scopes on the rifles and see how they look.

Thanks.

Was supposed to make that all happen today but as late as I am at getting to it I suspect it will not happen today. I have them both laid on the bed and have measured the trigger pull on both. The R700 SPS is a tad lighter but both break right at 5 pounds and will be dropped to about 3 pounds before I scope them as I find it easier to work with them before adding the scopes.

I've not yet changed the pull on the newer triggers so am unsure how easy it's gonna be to get the sealant off to get to the necessary adjustment screw. I'll try to get photos of the triggers to add to the thread Nonya started on adjusting the R700 triggers.
