Dfference between security six, and sp's
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:41:59 AM »
I got the desire to own a stainless 357 in 2-3" barrel length.  I have seen a few security six, speed six and gather the grooved vs adjustable sights is the big difference but how about comparing security  to the sp's.  I would really perfer adjustable sights so I can tailor the sight to my loads. I would consider a non ruger brand but prefer ruger.  Seems like as the barrel get shorter the price goes up.     Thanks for the help.  SN

Kinda almost like the difference between a Colt and S&W.  ???

The Security Six is in general terms the same gun as the Redhawk and the SP the same as the Super Redhawk. Of course they aren't exactly the same as there is a huge size difference but the Security Six technology is what the Redhawk was build on and the SP technology is what generated the Super RH.

A long ago 6" blued Security Six is one of the very few Ruger guns I have only fond memories of. It was a good solid package and shot quite accurately. Even the trigger wasn't bad on it. I've long since forgotten what I traded it on most likely a S&W tho or a Colt Python. I wouldn't hesitate a bit to buy a Security Six or Redhawk if a proper bargain came along. On the other hand the SP/GP/SRH just doesn't do much for me and there is little to no chance of me taking another of those home with me.

For more detail on the differences a person who likes Rugers more than me will need to chime in.

I have a 4" security six and HAD a 2 3/4" speed six...the difference was like the SW 65 and 66...both .357 and but the 66 had adj sites.  (Hope I got the SW model number correct!!!)

There are 2 or 3" security sixs' around.....solid guns...have had mine since 1985!

That would be the S&W 19 and 66.

You can get the three inch SP with adjustable sights. The SP,GP and SRH share in design

I have the stainless security six with a four inch barrel and it is a good gun. I had  one with a six inch barrel blued that seemed to be more accurate. I was stolen from me. Of course the difference in accuracy could be the twenty=five years in between guns! ;D

Thanks for the replies.  I sorta have it in for a stainless short barrel, the security catches my eye more, but not having shot any of shis series I cant say why.  Naturaly a short smith 19 would catch my eye as well as a 4" model 29, but I fear I lack the clams or am to cheap to let go of the clams.   Thanks again.  SN

The ruger six series are awesome revolvers. You pick one up and it screams quality, craftmanship, and durability.  I own a 4 inch S.S. Security Six, which also happens to be my first handgun.  Trigger was somewhat rough when I got it, but now that I've put 600+ rounds down the tube, it is quite nice. You will find that most of the rugers in the six series have a heavy/rough double action pull, but a very nice single action pull from the factory. The SP101 is a fine revolver, but smaller than the six series guns.

I agree with your attraction to 3" barrels. I have a 3" SP101, 66, 24, and a 2.5" 19. Great carry guns. The SP may be the best of all.

I love my 4 inch stainless Security 6 and occasionally surf Gun Broker for a shorter one: I think they made the Sec 6 in 2.75 bbl with adjustable sights and the Speed 6 with fixed.  I have seen some nice examples of each recently on Gun Broker, but I have too many other more pressing bills.  The security 6 seems to be a slimmer slightly smaller gun than the GP but I'm not absolutely certain of it.  A friend of mine loves his GP100 - can't recall how long the barrel is. They are all tough, dependable guns. I like my Sec 6 even more now that I have Hogue grips on it. I just wish Crimson Trace would make a laser grip for them.

The SP has much better balance for it's small size, than the Six would have with just a shorter barrel. The Speed Six is too grip heavy in my opinion and with a shorter barrel, the Security Six is too. Strip the grips off the SP and look how the weight has been taken off the grip end and applied to the underlug for better balance. The GP went through the same transformation. I own all four guns and the GP and SP handles way better than the Six guns.
