Contender .30-30 barrel twist question
« on: May 15, 2008, 07:23:33 PM »
Are .30-30 Contender barrels 1/12 or 1/10" twist?  Is the .30-30 barrel even available in a 1/10" twist?

All of T/C's .308 caliber barrels are 1:10 twist.

T/C used to use a 1:14" twist rate on all their 30-30 barrels.  I do not know when they switched to the tighter twist rate.  Unless your barrel is pretty recent, you'll have to measure it to know for certain.

I may have to give T/C a call to find out for sure.  I'd considered getting a .300 Whisper barrel for my Contender, but figured I could accomplish the same thing with a .30-30 barrel.  My plan is to use 240gr SMK bullets at around 1050fps (with a suppressor), but it will only work if the .30-30 barrel is 1/10" twist.  I like the idea of using the .30-30 over the .300 Whisper as it has more case capacity, so I can still use it to hunt deer with standard 150-170gr loads.  Plus, I won't have to deal with forming brass.  All of it is a moot point, however, if the twist isn't correct.

That long 240 Sierra will not stabilize in a 10" twist, according to the Sierra Manual Five, page 924.  It certainly did not in my Whisper barrel with it's 1:10" twist.  :-[

Interesting.  I may have to go with a 1/8" twist.  Does it say whether the 1/10" will stabilize a 220gr bullet?

At that low velocity, you'll need a 1:8.

With the standard 1-10 T/C twist you might be able to stabilize the 200 gn. BT bullets at that speed. It's the length of the bullet that determines twist not the Wt.
