Dave, it may be in your best interest to talk to your doctor. The rabies virus is nothing to play around with. It can be passed on by several ways, not just by a bite or scratch. If I was in an area where coon rabies was a problem, I would get vaccinated.

Several years ago my son came down with cat scratch fever. Yes it is more than just a song. Anyway it earned us a trip to the county infectious disease doctor for consultation. When talking about possible ways my son was exposed we found out the doctor was at one time a trapper himself. So the discussion turned to skunks coon and rabies. When he found out I was regularly handling both coon and skunks. He highly suggested I see my regular doctor and get a rabies vaccination, which I did. Like I said that was at least 10 years ago so I have my titer checked when I get routine physicals. That has earned me one booster over the years. I think it's well worth not having to worry about the unknown scratch or nick exposure like Tom mentioned. If I really thought I was exposed, Bite, etc, I would still get to the doctor for his take on it.

My son got bit by a coon two years ago. It latched onto his calf when he tried to release it.  He grabbed it and put it in a live trap. the doctor told us what to do to get it tested and said if he was going to be around animals like that he should just do the rabies series instead of waiting for the test results.
