Beretta Mato ?
« on: July 19, 2003, 11:55:53 AM »
I read that Dakota arms made these rifles for Beretta.  Is this true?  Any one own / or shot one.  What is their weight, overall quality, & features? Did a search, but didn't find much info on the mato's.  Any info will be appreciated.

I assume that Berretta dropped them because of the Sako purchase.
THANKS

SHW :  Beretta made the mato and mato deluxe, I see nothing about Dakota arms doing the work but it could be, anyhow it is a controlled feed action,3 or 4 shot detachable box mag, 23.6 in barrel, 8lbs, mfg in the US, adj trigger, 100% $1375 down to $495 in 60% add $355 for .375 H&H cal. now the Deluxe same cal. as the standard with deluxe check. walnut with ebont forend 7.9lbs. 100% $1725 down to $575 in 60% add $390 for .375 H&H cal. :D   JIM

I was under the impression that the action was made/supplied by Dakota.  Supposely the Model 76 Dakota action.  Can't find one close to look at.  Thanks for the info.

Interesting question about the Mato.

I have Beretta's 2002 and 2003 catalog.  The 2002 catalog has the Mato Synthetic for a retail price of $1,117 and the Deluxe for $2,470.

The catalog states the following:

"Taking its name from the Dakota Indian work for "bear," the Mato rifle is designed with the finest bolt action ever created: the Mauser 98.  It's just one of many features that lets the Mato raise the standard for high quality performance rifles."

The rifle has the following:

1.  3-position safety
2.  ergonomic bolt handle
3.  drop-out box magazine
4.  internal aluminum bedding block on the synthetic stock.

As stated, the acion is a Mauser 98 style with positive feed claw extractor.  The barrel length is 23.6" and the barrel is black satin.  The stock is dark grey with spiderwebbing.  The stock is also fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber composite.  The trigger is single but adjustable.  The synthetic weighs 8.0 pounds, and the deluxe weigts 7.9 pounds.

Now, while the Mato is in the 2002 catalog, it is NOT in the 2003.  As such, it would appear that it is no longer produced.  I wonder why?  As for whether Dakota Arms made the Matos - I'm not sure.   I know that I read an article - some years back - about the Mato.  I think that, with the Sako and Tikkas, Beretta already covers part of the rifle segment and decided to drop the Mato.

After more research, the Mato was built on the 97 Dakota action not the famous 76 action.  Still no answer on where the rest of the gun came from.  If they are built on the Dakota action, seems like a lot of gun for the money.  I am seeing them for around $800.00 to $900.00. I don't really like the detachable magazine idea, since the gun is no longer being made.

I would like to hear from any one that has shot or been around one.
I too agree that Beretta probably dropped it b/c of the Sako purchase.
