700 SPS Varmint on the way!!!!
« on: April 26, 2008, 04:30:07 PM »
I'm gonna be the winning bidder on a SPS Varmint  tomorrow and it's chambered for 7mm-08!!  It has a 24" barrel instead of the 26" though, but I actually prefer the 24".  They also have the SPS Varmint chambered in 300WSM with a 24" barrel that I would like to have too, but my funds won't allow me.  I've purchased 3 guns this month so I gotta give the wallet some time to build back up.  I'm planning on getting a Bell and Carlson Medalist Tactical/Varmint stock for this rifle and a good 30mm scope with mil-dot reticle if I can find one in the $500 range.  I really hope this rifle is a shooter because I've got some big plans for it.

It's 2am and I may be seeing things but when did Remmy start offering the SPS Varmint in those calibers, and with a shorter barrel no less?

The regular SPS model comes in those calibers alogn with the 24" barrel, you either made a typo or the listing is incorrect. Or I could be totally nuts and some guy chambered them for whatever and you'll be getting exactly what you wanted :)

I happen to agree with you. The SPS Varmint only comes with the 26" barrel. Is there a picture of this rifle one the site you are bidding on? If so look if it has 3 sling swivel studs. Also look to see if it has the ventilated for end. It should have 3 slots in the for end. If it does not have these 2 things it is just a regular SPS. I have seen on Gunbroker in the past where they had them mixed up. The SPS varmint does not come in the 7MM-08. You should check it out before you win the rifle because I am pretty sure you will end up with a standard contour barrel. As a matter of fact it should look just like the picture below. Except I painted my stock. Dale

:o If Remington is offering a SPSV in 7mm-08, put me down for two of them.

I am looking through my 2008 Remington catalog right now and I am sorry to give you bad news but the rifle you are about to buy is the regular SPS. The catalog number for it is 27357. It comes with a 24" barrel. It also has a 1 in 9 1/4 twist to it. The only calibers the SPS Varmint comes in is the 17 Rem Fireball, 204 Ruger, 22-250 Rem, 223 Rem, 243 Win, and the 308 Win. I would contact the seller and try to cancel my bid. That is unless you don't mind the regular SPS. Dale

I should have mentioned before that they are a Talo Exclusive and are not listed on Remingtons site.  There is 1 more 7-08 and 2 300WSM rifles left that I see on the site, but the dealer may have more of them.  The 7-08s' are $488 + shipping and the 300WSM's are $507 + shipping.  Check them out on Gunbroker and please don't out bid me on the 7-08, the others haven't been bid on yet.

Remington sometimes runs special calibers for a distributor.  I have and LVSF in 7mm08, so does my friend.  I saw one on a auction in 243.
These were never listed in the catelog.

I'm now officially the winning bidder!!  I just have to wait a few days for the rifle to get here. :(   I think I may top this rifle with one of the Bushnell Elite 6500 scopes if it is a shooter.

I went to gun Broker and looked at the description of the rifle you won. It does say it is a Varmint. You might be surprised though. It has a number 26 after the model number. I believe that means it has a 26" barrel. Let us know how it shoots and good luck with you new rifle. Dale

Dale, that would be pretty cool if it had a 26" barrel because I'm thinking of putting a can on it after I've added everything else.  I think I have some old 700 mounts and rings in the garage and I have a few scopes laying around so I'll rig something up.  I'll be back with a range report as soon as I can.

What do you mean by can? Are talking about a muzzle brake? I suspect that your rifle easily shoot under moa. I have had a couple  different 700'S and both have been great shooters. I have not heard of an SPS Varmint that has not great yet. Dale

Dale, when I say can I'm talking about a suppressor.  It's not legal to hunt with in Indiana but it'd be pleasant at the range.

Ken

You do understand the legal aspects of suppressors in the US I hope? And the fact that on guns that are not subsonic that the sonic boom is as loud as the cartridge firing?

GB, yes sir I'm well aware of the laws regarding suppressors and class III weapons; my local dealer specializes in such weapons and gave me the rundown it'll take me about $300 and 60 days to have a class III license/permit.  Not sure if I'm going to go that route with this gun because I want to hunt with it but I like having the option.

Picked my rifle up today and Dale you were right it has a 26" barrel.  I'm very happy with the rifle so far, I just hope it shoots as good as I think it will.  I've got all my reloading supplies ready, now I just have to mount a scope, load up some rounds and head to the range.  I'll post a range report as soon as I get a chance.

I've got a little something for my new rifle on the way.  I don't really like the factory stock so I ordered a Bell & Carlson A2 Style Vertical Grip Tactical Medalist Series stock in OD green with black webbing.  http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-110/Bell-&-Carlson-A2/Detail

It should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.  Now I need to find a good one piece tactical mount and a scope and bipod and I'll be all set up.

Pics are coming soon.

Regarding the Bipod, do it right the 1st time and get a Harris swivel/leg notch model. I finally got one and am still kicking myself for not getting one years ago! The swivel feature is a god send for those of us who shoot paper AND hunt. Uneven surface? tilt your rifle and it's level! The leg notches are just icing on the cake :)

Sniper, that is the bidod that I have on my wish list right now, actually I have 2 of them on there the 6" - 9" and the 13" - 27" models, although I may just get the 6" - 9" for prone and bench and maybe some shooting sticks for sitting.

Ken

It's got several notches that allow you to keep it set at different heights. The better feature is the swiveling. If you've never hunted with a bipod on even terrain, feel fortunate. A canted scope can be the difference between a hit or miss at several hundred yards. The swivel allows you to rock your rifle left and right to level the crosshairs out.
