Mild 45/70 loads
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:50:49 AM »
I read where some of you guys use 12 grains of Unique for light loads with cast bullets but the only powder source in my area does not stock Unique. Have any of you tried Trailboss for light loads and do you have good results? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I've found that 23 gr's of AA 5744 with a 405 gr gas check FN is a mild load in my Browning copy of an Win 1886.

I found the Unique that stimpylu32 recommended and am having a ball shooting 10 gr. under a 300gr laser cast bullet. Like shooting a 22, great fun. Anyway the other day my son in law comes over and wants to shoot my new 45/70 guide gun. I've tried hard to like this guy but his part time work ethic and full time know everything attitude just doesn't work for me, so I put on my old hunting jacket and load 30 of the Unique loaded shells in the left pocket and 30 of 300 gr laser cast bullets over 60 gr of IMR 3031 in the right. I load 4 light loads in the gun and fire away, then load 4 of the 3031 in and hand it to him to shoot. After about 20 rounds he remembered he had something else to do. My daughter called that night and asked me if I had beat him with a stick cause his face was black and blue. I suppose I should feel bad but I've been too busy chuckling to get there. Had to tell someone, don't dare tell my wife.

I tried the 14gr Trail Boss, 300 gr OT bullet load today and had 4 out of 5 bullets go in one ragged hole at 50 yards.  Practically no recoil.  I only loaded 5 but will have to do some more.

Is there any filler or wads used in these loads with the trailboss? I am interested in using it on 250 to 300 grain bullets.

Use NO filler or wads with those light smokeless loads of .45-0!!

Using filler or wads has been known to cause chamber "ringing" damage.

Hodgdon shows TB data for a 405gr cast bullet as 12gr start, 13gr max.

47-70

That's a sure way to get yourself or worse someone else hurt , granted TB is very forgiving in a round like the 45/70 but what would have happened had it been say Bullseye . ALWAYS weigh your powder charges when working up loads and used the proper load data .

Just dumping powder into a case can get you killed real fast .

47-70's posts trouble me.  He proudly states that he exceeded the maximum published load for his rifle and "guessed" at the charge level, yet he fails to see anything wrong with the practice.  And when cautioned by a site moderator he dismisses the dressing-down offhandedly, showing no respect at all for the moderator's experience and caution.  This sets a dangerous precedent for the less-experienced reloaders who may read this thread and think these practices are accepted at GBO.

Hodgdon lists a maximum pressure with 13.0 grains of Trail Boss of 25,600 cup.  47-70 assumes that the pressure curve for this low-pressure powder is linear.  I assume he makes this assumption out of ignorance.  Exceeding the max charge weight by 23% does not guarranty that the chamber pressure will rise by just 23%, it may spike much much higher. It may do this inconsistently.  I can't find pressures above 26,000 cup recommended for TrailBoss in any cartridge.  Perhaps there is a very good reason for that!  I wonder why that excessive load is even still shown here?  ???

I wanted to double check the data before I dumped the posts , and found the same info that you came up with , with the ever changing info coming from the powder and bullet companies you just never know for sure unless you check .

47/70

Your skating on thin ice using loads that might be OK in your rifle but not in someone Else's , so if you can not post reliable data from a good source --- DO NOT POST IT HERE
