The only way you are going to be able to shoot at 200 yards is with one of the premium sabot slugs. They are going to be launched in the 1800 - 1900 fps range. Even those do not have the best trajectory over 200 yards. But if you do shoot that distance with a 150 yard zero you are going to be hitting about 3.5" high at 100 and about 7.5" low at 200 and starting to drop off fast. The 20 ga is going to be in the 800 f/p range as far as energy is concerned at 200 yards. The 12 ga is going to be more. I think the 20 and 12 will shoot pretty close to the same. I am not sure if the 12 ga would have a better trajectory or not. It is a heavier bullet, but is bigger in diameter, but of course will have more energy. The 12 has a heavier bullet and launches at about the same velocity. I think it comes down to how much recoil do you want to deal with and how much energy do you want out at 200 yards. Some consider 1000f/p the minimum for deer. Of course projectile placement is the most important thing and when you have that much drop, you had better know how far it is. Some shoot the lower recoil better. I think it is a toss up. How well you handle recoil would be the deciding factor, the 12 has considerably more than the 20. just my 2 cents

I haven't shot slugs for years, and find the notion of 200 yard slug shooting amazing.  In the day 50 yards would have been pushing it.  I know technology has given them far more range now.  It will be interesting to see what other response you get.

My 24" 12ga. Encore barrel loves the Hornady sst's .  best groups average 1 to 2" @100yards .  I sight about  3" High @ 100 and I can hit balloons @ 175yards until my shoulder won't let me anymore. I have not shot it past 175yards, so I can not tell you Much more. I have talked to a lot of guys who say, their barrels won't shoot the SST's well. I know my 870 SPS does not like them at all.By the way if you do not like recoil go with the 20ga.

My ultra does'nt like the sst either.... That is why I am thinking about the barrel... I have been told the 20ga is plenty powerful @200 yds... Supposedly about the same as a .50 cal muzzelloader 250gr sst  with 110gr of pyrodex?  So This is why I am here doing my homework.... Either the encore barrel or a new h n r ultra 20 ga.... I have a new t?c catalog... According to it the 12ga is a 1 in 28 twist and the 20ga has a 1 in 24??? That would seem plenty twist to get some good accuracy . Wouldnt you think?

I would say it's more than enough twist.. kinda wish now i would have gone with the 20ga. I have never noticed recoil while shooting at game. But off a bench the 12ga can be brutal .  oh well live and learn! I see Remington came out with a new slug this year. Has anyone tried them yet?

You Might check with  Ed's t/c , Midsouth shooting supply, Midway USA, or your local dealer..  I'm sure you can find one cheaper.

Had them both. Wished I kept the 20 barrel. Shot Federals Expanders 2" at 100. Killed decent buck at 80 with it no problem. Barrel was from custom shop in 26". 12 ga. is SS 24" from Cabelas. Shoots reloaded Hammerheads (or Hastings Lasers) great, Lightfields so so, SST's OK depending upon box you get. One minute grouped at 12 next box at 3 o'clock.  Not impressed with the SST quality control. Preference is by far the 20 ga not just because of recoil but overall performance seemed to be better. I still hunt with 12 in 870 but liked the 20 in Encore. One of those deals that you regret when you sell a barrel.

Keep us posted on how she shoots.          Brutal is right but manageable.
