Custom barrel in 284 Win

Well since I hope to get into reloading this year and I am wanting a little bit of a challenge I am thinking of the 284win as a hog and varmint round for hunting the longer ranges. What do yall think? I was thinking Bullberry or MGM.

No reason it will not work just fine, but I've taken whitetail out to 156 with my 7-30 Waters.  Used 130 gr Sierra pistol bullets.  Don't overlook it.  I think a 154 at hog ranges would do just fine.

Thanks. I haven't had time to look around but I think I can get MGM to make what I want and I am thinking a 20 inch barrel or 22inch.

I like the cartridge. It's one super round that was well ahead of the short-mag craze. One problem with it an Encore: The extractor has to be relatively loose ( on a weak spring)  in order to slip over the fat case and behind the rebated rim. Thus is can easily slip off the rim of a cartridge that sticks a bit. And I don't mean much. This is based on personal experience. Had a buck that had been hit hard but not out laying some 50 yards out in front of my stand. Imagine my surprise when I opened the action but heard the extractor slip over the rim. Fortunately the buck wasn't going anywhere as I extracted the case with my Leatherman. I had worked up the load (using Rl 19) when it was considerably cooler and it worked fine. But on this unseasonably warm Nov day it generated just a tad more pressure causing the problem cited. I would suggest a temp insensitive powder like H4350 if you do go this route.
 I LIKE MY 284 BARREL, BUT TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO KEEP THE LOAD BELOW MAX. PRESSURE.
FWIW, Encores  and Contenders seem to work best with  rimmed cases.

Thanks for that info. I am looking at this in my Encore. What length of barrel do you have on yours?
