My fallow-up to the 45 LC shot shells
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:20:24 PM »
Some of you may remember the thread about this , Sweetwater and burch spent some time working out the bugs to form a shot shell for their 45LC's using 444 Marlin cases , while I took another route and used 460 S&W brass .

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,141281.0.html

After 5 loadings I have been very pleased with the results , no split case necks at all from working the brass . For anyone wanting to try this , the process is very simple .

When using 460 brass you will need to use a 460 shell holder as the rim is too large to fit a 45 colt holder with out turning the rim , the next step is to trim your cases to 0.010 shorter than the cylinder . At this point you will need to run the trimmed cases into a 270 or 30/06 sizing die , this will put a slight taper to the case and allow it to fully fill the chamber including the throat area .

Now you are ready to prime and load the rounds , I have found that 8 Grains of Unique as a powder charge works very well , over the powder you will need a 0.030 card or fiber wad ( can be made or bought ) , now add shot till it is just shy of the case mouth , with 7 1/2 shot you get around 190 to 200 grains .

Over the shot you will need to place another wad and use a dab of white school glue to hold the wad in place , ( that's why shot will be just shy of the case mouth ) .

I have shot these loads from 10 , 20 and 30 feet , the pattern and penetration are more than adequate for most small game and snakes at these ranges .
