Rings for 50 mm Simmons Whitetail Classic
« on: May 17, 2008, 05:47:05 AM »
I have done the search, seen the pictures, checked the FAQ, etc.

I have a 22-250 fluted 24" bull barrel coming home with my Buffalo Classic.

My plans are for 99.9% target shooting at 100 and 200 meters in "cast bullet competition".
Yes, it will get a couple jacketed bullets down it from time to time, but mostly my own cast creations.

that being said, I am looking at the Simmons Whitetail Classic Rifle Scope 6.5-20x 50mm Adjustable Objective Truplex Reticle Matte.
I picked this scope because of the reviews say that it looks great on higher powers where most (lower priced) scopes get dark or cloudy
I have seen a pictures of Quick's with medium rings.  For those of you that have this scope a couple questions:

Would you go with high rings, or medium rings?

Would you pick the Truplex, or mil-dot?  Keep in mind most of this will be shooting targets.
Here is what the target looks like.  I can't see this target with the stock sights on the buffalo classic because of the red color.

I have a feeling the mil-dot would allow me to center the inside circle with the blocks where the truplex only gives me a cross hair and I need to estimate where the center is?

The only issue with the WTC18 Truplex is the reticle is on the thick side(aside from the krinkle finish!), the mildot appears to be much finer, but never having looked thru the mildot, I dunno.

Tim, if you did it again, would you buy the high rings or stick with the med ones?  Not sure I would like the krinkle finish either.  I might continue to look around.

Medium Burris Sig Zees are my favorite ring, my only complaint is they don't make them in low, twenty-two of my H&Rs have scopes mounted in medium Sig Zees.  ;) It doesn't take much to modify the hammer spur and extension to accomodate scopes that aren't Handi friendly that have large power rings and/or ocular bells.

With the Burris rings, medium in the signature Z rings are slightly higher than medium in the standard Z rings, so you can fine tune the scope height by selecting standard or signature type rings.  The Signature rings will allow you to use the offset bushings so you can get a little more elevation if you need it.  I am curious about choosing a 22-250 for cast bullets, they have the ability to launch bullets over 4,000 fps, and cast bullets like speeds about a third of that.  If you are going to use heavier bullets in cast you may have some difficulty getting them stable at the slow speeds with the slower twist barrel of the 22-250.  I can say I have never shot a cast bullet in a 22-250 however.  Larry

Medium Signature Zee rings are .270" tall, highs are .420",  Zee rings are .255" tall, highs are .450", all measurements are from the top of the rail to the bottom of the scope tube.  ;)

Gas checked and properly sized for your bore with good high velocity lube, you should be able to push .224" bullets to 2700-3000fps or so, at least that's what fellas at Cast Boolts are reporting. ;)

I am pretty active on that list (under another name).  They helped talk me into the 22-250 :)

Na, I signed up for this list, and rimfirecentral.com several years ago with this name, but started using my CASS name "Compass Will" since then, and just didn't feel like changing my name here and becoming a "new person" again.

I wanted a gun that would "out perform" my 17 HMR that I traded when I bought the Buffalo classic, so if I load up some jacketed ammo I will have a barrel that will fit that bill.

I love to cast my own bullets.  I would like to play with the guys in the "cast bullet association" since they shoot all winter at the range.
I understand a .22 would not be there first choice, but neither would an H&R.  Most of them are playing with over $2K guns (plus scopes).

I just hope to have fun.  I started looking at a .223 but the twist is wrong (to fast) for lead bullets.  Plus it was pointed out to me that the 22-250 has a shoulder angle that is better suited for loading lighter loads and getting a better uniform burn. I have read of guys loading them down to .22LR speeds.  I will be starting with a mold that is a round tip 55 grain gas checked bullet that works best at 2300 fps.  that's almost as fast as a 17HMR without the cost.  I think most people shy away from casting .22's because of the size of the bullet makes it hard to work with (hard to hold in your fingers).

I could also shoot my 45-70 with the "cast boys" but a "100 shot Sunday" with the 45-70 starts to hurt my shoulder, even with light loads.
Plus I can cast eight .22's with 400 grains of lead, or one 45-70.

At any rate, I am looking forward to the challenge, think about how much I will learn!  If it don't work out, I will still have a nice varmint barrel.

I got the WTC and it is a clear scope but I would try to use the lowest set of rings I have the high ones. That makes it hard to keep the cheek down on the stock.  I got the regular cross hairs they are OK for what I use it for.

I have a set of the Medium Signature Zee rings with my WTC 50mm.  It is a close fit but not bad.  I like the krinkled matte finish.  The higher powers worked well for me out to 400-500 yards for prairie dogs.
