Got my first 10/22
« on: February 27, 2008, 12:50:11 AM »
Never had one or shot one before. After years of seeing all the crazy ways one can trick out  a 10/22 I finally decided to give one a try.As a rule I despise aluminum in guns ( a personal quirk) and i'm curious about the durability of these rifles. I cant hunt with it here in Penn. but she'll be a target, plinking and house rifle. My house is 1/2 a twin and overpenetration would be VERY bad. With the proper ammunition a .22LR can be quite effective in this role. I'd like to start the customizing with a non-folding synthetic with a vertical pistol grip.No handguard needed, and I'm wondering whats the best version of that stock out there? I'm thinking of it as a shtf rifle as ammo is cheap , accurate , effective in a surprising number of applications when properly used and its low muzzleblast wont attract alot of attention.Who knows what she'll end up?  Anybody out ther trick their 10/22 for this application? I'd be curious to here what you did.

I have tricked out two but along a different line from your thoughts. I am interested only in target shooting and plinking. I changed to 20" Green Mountain .920 barrels and installed Power Custom hammer and sear kits. These include new springs and shims to remove slop in the trigger mechanism. I built my own stocks in a thumbhole target pattern to fit me. One is glued up from 1/2" birch plywood, the other from 3/4" red oak with mesquite fore end tip and grip cap. I wouldn't use oak on any thing with any recoil. Also did some appearance things, radiused and polished the triggers, polished the bolts and bolt handles and then jeweled the bolts. Also sustituted nylon rod for the steel bolt buffer to quieten the clank sound of the bolt in recoil. I also drilled and tapped the magazine release and cut off a stainless allen bolt to where it would screw in to the head to make it easier to drop the magazine. Both rifles shoot consistent groups in the .4" range with Win. T-22 ammo, .6" with Rem Golden Bullets, from the bench. These rifles are very dependable. My son purchased the first rifle I did in the '70's and shot it a lot, then sold it to me a few years ago. It has never given any problems. Total cost to to do these mods was about $175 per rifle. If you wish you can spend over $1000 easily, mosty for appearances.

I too decided to join the club on one of those.  I got mine in March and really like to shoot it.  So far the rifle is left factory original, with a buffertech recoil buffer the only optional item installed.  It is very accurate, and has only had one failure to fire, a faulty primer on some old Federal ammo, not the gun's fault, but ammo related.

Thinking of getting another one, but with more features over the standard model.

I went the target route also, the only thing original on mine is the receiver and the bolt (Which I customized myself).

I would stick to a shotgun for home defense but that's just me.

If you really want to pick the brains of 10-22- nuts visit rimfirecentral.com that's where I got all the info to do my project gun.

Be careful though with all the parts available and the fact that you can do all the work yourself it's very addictive.
