Ideas for gift guns...
« on: May 18, 2008, 06:29:04 AM »
Ok... I've got a couple kids that are getting ready to take good steps forward.  One should get his Eagle award in about 6 months.  The other will get her Girl Scout Gold Award at about the same time.  Both like to shoot... My daughter has bought her own HR USH, Beretta 390 and a Beretta 686 (all her money, not MINE!).  Anyway, I'm thinking about getting them each an appropriate memento of the occasion.  Maybe something with a little bit of word engraving to commemorate the awards.  Anyone got any ideas?  I'm thinking a Marlin lever or some kind... there's a big slab on the side to engrave, that might work.

I'm thinking rifle...  budget is maybe $600 each.  Winchester 9422 Eagle Scout is over $8K... sort of pricey.

more ideas?

You are looking at about $400 for the Golden Boy and add on $125 for the personalized receiver and engraving. Look at both links and the 1st one or the Engraving one will tell you the instructions for each. Going this route will save you up enough to buy a few thousand .22 rounds to pop off. Also on the Golden boy or any rimfire for a fact make sure they do NOT dry fire it. The Golden Boy has the best action in .22's and the accuracy is great. This is the route I would go if I were you. Also Henry has the best CS in the market and if you have a problem they will get it fixed even if its your fault.

I haven't handled or even seen a Henry.  How's the quality?  The ads on line don't do the best job of showing their wares.  They look sort of "cheap".  Maybe they are, maybe they aren't.  I don't have easy access to one over here in Germany.  I'm looking for something with good quality but not world class.  A RugRemChester or T/C might be in order.  Just a little engraving for congratulations.  Can't afford much more than that.  Of course while I've been digging around a bit... I've got the bug for a really nice rifle.

If you're in Germany how about an Anschutz?  A world class 22 that would last a lifetime.
My first thought was a Marlin 39A.

I don't see how you think they could look cheap. IMO they are better quality then any Marlin on the market and they are worth the extra money. They are fully made in the US of US made parts and they are the smoothest lever action on the market. They do come with high grade wood in most cases and have a really good finish. Check out the Henry forum for more. You will find a bunch of pages on them. $600 for a customised Henry Lever Action isn't cheap.

The boy scout commemorative at $1200 doesn't fit either.....

How about a brand new in the box Marlin 36A, or a nice Browning .22 lever action?
