colt is a COPY of the 1911. the 1911 is a military design. colt did not design it. John Moses Browning did. all current production '45s' are modified copies of the Browning 1911 design. regardless of the cartridge name.

Here is a few that I've owned. The one I've kept is the Eclipse. The others have been traded or sold, unfortunately. I've owned several others but never got any pics of them. I enjoyed shooting all of them and never had any trouble out of any of them. I really would like to have a Combat Commander one day. But, for now I carry my Eclipse when I feel the need for a .45.

i have 3  '1911s'

a series 70 colt that i campaigned in IPSC competition for 15 yrs. It grew into a 3 chamber, 4 port, aimpoint equiped, .45 that was used way past its' prime. the wide body 38 supers were in use when I retired it. It will arise as a .45 ltd/carry gun.

the second is a wide body, a Para Ordnance 9x23w. It is a full race IPSC open class, no excuses pistol. The trigger pull is 1 3/4#.  By no excuses I mean there is NOTHING about this pistol that keeps me from being champion. The pistol just needs a better driver.

My third is another '1911' wide body clone. Another Para Ordnance; this a .45acp. P14-45. I bought it used. It looks like it started 'life' as a stock model. It came to me with a Bomar rear, cross dovetail front sight, 3 hole aluminum trigger, black 'commander' like hammer, 'speed bump' grip safety and ambidextrous thumb safeties. The grip and thumb safeties appear to be Browns'. It has a Briley spherical bushing and a full length quide rod. Considering the price of a new, 'no frills' Para, and all the work done to this one, I got a 'smokin deal'.
I put in a 17# mainspring, a Dawson Precision Ice mag well and a Wilson extended/wide slide release. I cut off the 'extended' and kept the 'wide'. I have not had the trigger pull checked but it feel at least twice that of my 9x23 so it is probably 3 3/4 - 4#. OH, almost forgot. I changed the sights. I installed Dawson Awesome Optic, Perfect Impact, fiber optic sights. Love 'em.

SharonAnne:  What loads do you use with your 9x23 race gun???

I ask because years ago - as in the way back when..... - we used to hot load the 38 Super with data from the old Lyman manual or the Sierra manual.  I once took a 170 lb South American Jaguar with a Col. Askins 38 Super load using a 115 gn slug and a full charge of H-110, and the Colts seemed to handle those loads easily.  We used to use 158-160 gn round nose slugs for plinkers over charges of Unique.  Life, at that time, with the 38 Supers became so much better when we found we could re-barrel with Bar-Sto Barrels that chambered on the case mouth and gave much, much better accuracy - but those were the old days.  I suspect there are better powders to use, more effective loadings and better boolits but I would need to hear that from someone who uses these loads regularly.  Mikey.

Mikey, I had to do some research. I was using a Vectran powder called SP2. I think it is no longer imported. i was using 9grains with a 125gr. plated truncated cone.

I will (whenever I get back to shooting) be using HS6. I will be using the same 125gr TC and start with Hodgdens .38 Super max load of 8.3gr. and work up to a USPSA major load or 9.4gr, whichever comes first. I have a number of 9x23 loads I picked up from various shooters. I will email them if you are interested.
