Holsters for the S&W X Framed handguns?
« on: January 26, 2011, 05:50:43 PM »
I've been shopping for holsters for my John Ross 500 with a 5" barrel and have discovered there just not many. Has anyone bought seen, or experienced the DeSantis Black Mambas yet? I called DeSantis but, they wont give out much info on this one. Wish Survival Sheaths would make one for the X frames, have one for my Mountain Gun and is superb but, alas, he does not. What has anyone here been using with these big guns?

I have one from Mernickle & Simply Rugged.  The Mernickle holster is very tight and unforgiving.  Change front sight height to a taller sight and you are SOL.  I like both but prefer simply rugged if I could only have 1 belt holster.  I use the Wyoming Combination Holster as a shoulder holster and if I was limited to just one holster for life – this would be it.  Mine is made for the Seville 500 Linebaugh Max with an 8” barrel but the X-frame snuggles into it nicely and is useable if needed.

ole 5 hole, is a piece of hide off a dead cow really worth this much? I've dealt with Simply Rugged and he is reasonable but, the other two are out of my price range! You didn't saY which holster you have of these manufactures? I thought I was going to get the Black Mamba but, when I called DeSantis to ask about this item I was told they do have them in stock then I ordered one from a wholesaler on the internet cheaper, they said they had the 5" .460 X frame model but, not the 5" .500 X frame model? Sales people at DeSantis aren't on the ball or don't have much gun knowledge? No knock on Gene DeSantis but, he needs knowledgable people if he intends on selling holsters. Probably better off not going with the Black Mamba? $150 price tag for a yard or two of elastic and injected molded plastic doesn't set well with me anyway.
Maybe I'll just carry this thing Mexican style and forget a holster?

I had all three - I sold the Mernickle holster, when I sold my 4" model.  The Wyoming shoulder holster is for my 500 Linebaugh Max but the 5" JR can use it in a pinch.  If you purchase quality it will last you for a limetime and it's only money - you'll make more of that stuff and it all gets spent one way or another.  A piece of cow hide is just one way of spending it.

Rather have more iron and less leather? At 62, wonder how many more tomorros I have left?

I had one made for my 480 ruger Raging Bull.  I am suer they could custom make you one for your x frame.  Here is where I had it made.   http://brigadegunleather.com/    ..great workmanship.  Mine is a cowboy holster with belt and ammo loops.  Looks great and wears great.

Well nevermind.....seems they are being overwhelmed with orders and have suspended them for now.....sorry. =-(
