Question from the new guy!
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:49:17 AM »
Long time lurker, but new member and proud new owner of a .44 magnum handi-rifle!

Now for the question(s):

In the catalog for the new .44 magnums, it states the .357 and .44 magnums would be manufactured on a sb1 receiver and only be able to be refitted with shotgun barrels.

My new .44 has SB2 on the side of the barrel and my serial number starts with HY (which I thought meant it was a rifle receiver, not a shotgun).   Any help clearing this up would be much appreciated!

The next question I had was I wondered if anyone had used the Hornady leverevolution .44 mag ammo and what type of results they got @ the range and on deer.  I purchased this gun for deer hunting in Indiana and have tried Winchester soft points with 2 inch groups @ 100 yards and felt that was pretty good, but just wondered what others were shooting as well.

Thanks for your time,

Jim

Welcome aboard!  Lots to learn here, I'm pretty new here myself but have gotten hooked on learning from these guys.  I've got a 44 that is a real shooter, have to put a scope on it yet to see how good.  With open sights it shoots better than I can with most other rifles I own.  The Y means it's a 2008 year frame.  Pull the butt stock off to see the back of the frame, if solid it's an SB-1.  Check the FAQ at the top of the list and it will give you more info.  DP.

Welcome to GBO. You probably already know it one of the friendliest outdoor forums on the web and there are some very informed people who are regulars here too.

dpe.ahoy is correct. Look through the FAQ It will give you all the answers you are looking for about frame types. Read the FAQ before you take off your stock. You can tell by looking in the frame area where the barrel goes too.  While you are there read through the whole section. There is a lot of good information and how tos there. The FAQ will answer most if not all of your questions you might have. It one of the most through FAQ I have seen on the 'net.

Thanks for the replies and the advice.  I will check out the FAQ more thoroughly as time allows.

I'm sure I'll pop in and post from time to time.

Enjoy your day!
