my 24 lb confederate mortar in action at the spring nssa nationals.  17th out of 53 mortars   51 feet 1.5 inch

Thanks for the pix.  I'll bet that's a steel mortar with no liners, isn't it?  There were quite a few "Confederate mortars" like that made up for NSSA members within about the past 10 years.

Dan I can't draw for s__t but I can describe these pretty closely as far as outside is concerned.

Barrel is right-circular cylinder, hemispherical at breech end.  A steel bar the proper size and length for the trunnions is welded to the center of the hemisphere.  I'm not sure whether the hemisphere is machined out for the bar or not, it probably is to some extent.  As far as I know these are made from only two pieces of steel, the barrel bar and the trunnion bar.  Bore of a US or CS 24 pdr. is 5.82 inches.  I think these are also made in 12 pounder size.  I don't know what the chamber shape or dimension is.  This pattern is copied from one or two surviving CS (are you ready for this?) CAST IRON originals.  The Confederate States did not have steel to use, nor even bronze at that time, so they used what they had.  One of the originals is (or was) on a monument at Amelia Courthouse, Virginia, and is shown in various books on CW artillery.

This is my 12 pound tube need to find one of it shooting. Did OK was 15th... We were 1st and 2nd in the past nationals.... and the cannons. scale 3" ord and 6 pound.

Great photos thanks for sharing these  rampa room artillery and MR.GADGET .
By the way how much cannon grade does that powder chamber in the 12 pounder hold? And then how much does a 24 hold?
the biggest mortar I have is a beer can mortar and it can loosely fit whole in the bore of that big 24.

For the most part I shoot 300 to 315 of 1f and I have some friends with 24's that shoot 700 to 900 in them. The other 4 - 12 pounders we shoot run about the same but one that shoots 240 to 260. and that's at a range for 100 yards.

Well, with my old powder I was shooting 1100 grains to make it to 100 yards, but now i have bought a keg of really hot cannon grade so I am down to 650 for a base charge. I would be shooting 1f but i got a good deal on the cannon grade so i will use it up and buy 1f next time. hey mr gadget are you going to the artillery shoot in august? at the fort? i have never been and I am really exited to go.

the carriage you see with the limber bod on it is for moving my gun around camp on it makes it easier. i am building a 5/8 scale limber now to pull it with tho, does anyone have a good line on quality/ cheap iron works for the limber box it self? maby the copper top
