Finally found it ! I think

Since my old powder is not available. I've been surching for a powder to drive a .358 win .250 over 2300.  Last night I was looking at one load ,one cartridge and found 3 sources that gave a load I  tried. 53 grns of 748. also found one 0n the net. Would I be safe in using this ? No other major manual lists this load.

      I DON"T THINK SO!!!    Max charge I've found for that powder is in my Vol ll Hornady manual,which is a fairly liberal one,at 46.7gr. Not seeing that load in any of the manuals should tell you something.

This old boy is really into 35 caliber rifles and obviously has much experience.  His loads are hotter than I care to duplicate in the 35 Whelen and he notes many loads as "over max" or words to that effect.  Having said that, I think it is significant that he does not have a .358 Win. load for 250 gr. bullet that reaches 2200 fps.  That tells me something.  Think about it.

I only look for 2300 fps or so from my Rem. 700 Whelen using 250 grain bullets.  The 35 cal. 250 bullets do not need to go over 2300 fps to perform beautifully on antelope, deer and elk.  I have taken all of those with my Whelen.

I have no experience with the .358 Win. but expect that it performs best with the 200-225 gr. bullets.  The Speer 220 FN out of my Whelen is dynamite on deer and eating size elk.  For ranges out to 200+ yards it's all you need in a .35.

Why do you have to have 2300fps?  2200 is easy to get and will do anything the same bullet going 100 more fps.  I recently worked up a top performing load in my Whelen getin 2550 fps with a 250 grain Speer but am planning to work down a bit when my brass goes empty again.

Who said manuals are Gospel?

CB - I think I found that load you cited. Page 44 of "The Complete Reloading Manual for the 356 & 358 Winchester" has that load listed by Barnes Bullets. This is in the 358Win section. Several other pages in the same manual show loads surpassing 2300fps with a 250gr bullet. Also states a 26inch barrel, or some other variant like a pressure barrel, etc, all of which give a distorted view of what is happening upon exit.

Manuals are but a guide, but should have some modicum common data. If there is a lot of disparity between the manuals, than we have to look at the test equipment and components to sort the variables to where we can pass judgment on the written page. When you get ready to load the cases for your 250gr bullets, be kind to your rifle. Let it have a say in the matter. It will tell you if it appreciates what you are trying to accomplish, or not. All 250gr bullets wii not reach the same velocity with the same powder charge. What's a guy to do?!? Take the rifle, load it, and shoot it....and listen...it will tell you if more is better, or not. The longer your barrel, the more likely you are to reach this goal. If it's a carbine, don't ruin it by trying to make it do something it was never intended to do; keep a lid on the pressures. I don't know of any animal that needs a 250gr 35Cal bullet at 2300fps to put it down.

My 356Win will top 2200 with factory 250's, my handloads are in the same neighorhood. I sort of wish for a 225gr flatnose, but guess that will have to come from LBT!

Speer makes a flat nose 220 which is as close as you're gonna get to 225 grains and I do like that bullet.
