Is This a Good Deal?

Ran across a Marlin 336, .30-30. This is the straight stock, no Pistol Grip, Rifle. Rifling looks good and the action is smooth. It has the old style (micro-groove?) rifling.
Junk scope mounted. Stock and fore-end need to be refinished, they are in bad shape. No rust.
Pawn shop is asking $219, I am sure I could get it out the door for $200.
Is this a reasonable price? Seems really cheap to me, but I haven't priced Marlins in a long time.

Unless you refinish stocks yourself I would let that one go.
I've seen alot of 30-30's in 90% or better condition for less than $275.

Tn_junk, With the straight grip I would try to determine if it is a Texan or Marauder model. Byron

You should grab it.

While common .30-30 carbines may be dime-a-dozen for $75-$100 more in good condition, older  straight-gripped models are becoming very hard to find - and expensive when found.
Well worth your while to refinish it.

18 1/2" & 20" barreled Texans are worth about $450-500, and the rarer 16 1/4" Marauder upwards of $700.

Ranger44 is right. From your description, you seem to have found a rifle with a good bore, good action, and less-than-good wood.  For $200, it sounds like you have a chance at a pretty good project gun.  Get a decent forend and stock from Treebone Carving or Precision Gun Works, and pretty that rifle up into something personalized that your friends will envy.  Junk the scope and install a good receiver sight.  You'll have a nice handling deer rifle that most likely you'll never part with.
