Tougher In Alaska
« on: June 11, 2008, 05:10:08 PM »
Tomorrow night I understand the history channel is showing a group from here in Fairbanks.  They are going camping with the local Boy Scout troop in the winter time.  My son did this a few years ago.  They went out camping during the winter time and the temp had to be below a certain degree to get a badge.  They got their badge.  Afterwards Sky took me over and showed me the ice shelter they had made for the night.  It's interesting how a bunch of kids with guidance can survive the night in an ice shelter, at those extreme temperatures.  It was an important lesson for them considering where we live.

I think this will prove interesting to many of you.

Mentioned it to my son last night.  Next thing I know he is really wound up telling his Mom about the camping trip.  He was talking about how warm the shelter got after 10 boys got inside.  How the walls turned from snow to ice, and did not drip like you would think they would.  He said the worst thing was during the night they all had to go outside to pee.  Nobody wanted to brave the 50 below temp just to go.  Finally Tim could hold it no longer and opened the blanket they had hung over the door.  The cold air swirled inside and everyone jumped for the door.  10 boys hurrying as fast as they could then a mad rush to get back inside fast.  Sky said that was the worst part, having to get up and go outside in the middle of the night.  It's really interesting how young boys get so excited about doing something like that.  How easy it is to beat seemingly impossible odds, by just using your head.

I watched at least a couple of episodes but that dummy that hosts it ruined it for me so I stopped watching. If he would just be the host and not try to get so involved in things it is so clearly obvious he has no business doing it would be far better and more interesting. As I said he ruins it for me and I just gave up on the show.

Yea, kids have to be a bit tougher in Alaska. You sure don't see warning signs like these near a typical schoolyard in the lower 48.

Good sign, hope the bullet hole was there before the sign was put up.

Ha I watched this show for the first time tonight.  The biologist at the start Tom Seaton, is a friend of mine.  The guy that lost the dog to the wolves, Bill Blizzard, while he is not a friend, I know him.  The firemen GEO was working with are at the station here in North Pole.  Many of those guys are friends that I knew from when I was working out of the fire station on Ft Wainwright before I retired.  My neighbor and his two oldest daughters are volunteers at that station.  The Boy Scout troop is the one my son was in.  He has been on the same camping trip, camping on that lake.  Last winter when I was out looking for the wolves that were killing all the dogs in our neighborhood, I was running in the same area that Bill Blizzard took the camera crew to, it's part of the Chena Lakes Flood Control Project, and is right behind my house.

Watched it for 1st time, very good show overall, but could do with less of Geo and more about story line ::) Those Boy Scouts impressed me,and I'd be proud to spend some time with them. Hey SD, kept looking for ya hoping to see ya  :D :D  Hey maybe you could be the host, thats a novel idea a host that knows what they are talking about! ;)

Hollywood imitating real life, I watch a few of their shows for the laughs. Those two survival shows are a hoot. I think their only real qualification to be the star of the show is their willingness to eat bugs and other unsavory stuff. Their attempts to catch fish and build rafts are pathetic.
