Hoyt Vectrix delamination?
« on: May 24, 2008, 07:31:33 PM »
Has anyone heard of the Hoyt Vectrix delaminating...limbs cracking? I took mine out of the case today and noticed that it had a crack in the bottom limb about 2"X1CmX1/8".  Really made me mad, I have bear baits in and wanted a kill with the bow.  It is only the camouflage portion of the limb(down to the white section).  Do you think it would hurt to kill my bear before sending it back to Hoyt?  It seemed to shoot fine tonight but the last thing I need is a limb in the face.  Oh, and no it was not subjected to extreme heat or shock...Any thoughts or experience with this? >:(

I think it stems form there layered limb design.  When done right they are very tough and strong but it does not take much ( little air bubble for instance) and you have a spot that will crack out at some time.  I did a google search after reading your post and found several hits in other forums talking about the very same bow and same splitting between layers you described.  It has been several years back but had one of there bows with same layered limb tech.  I did not have any problems with mine but sold it due to hearing of several others on the 3D tournament splitting between layers.

Frankly, I would not shoot it.  Since you have already, have someone look to see if the two bottom limbs are drawing evenly and taht there is not even the slightest twisting in the limb.  If not you should be ok to shoot it but the split will continue to open up.  Now having said that and not being able to see you bow, I shot one on the 3d tournaments for a few years with a hairline split on the outside of one of the limbs it did not go all the way through and was right on the seam of layers.  The limbs did start to twist and I continued to shoot it.  The crack did grow from about 1 in to about 2 1/2 by the time I sold it.  Judging from you measurements, are you saying 1 cm deep--that is probably about half of the limb.  I would suggest having someone who works on Hoyts look at it and tell you if you can get a few more shots out of it before repairs.

Matt,

I appreciate the rapid response and research.  The split is 2" long 1Cm wide and approx 1/8" deep...I'm trying to attach photos.

That is not what I had in mind.  Man that would make me mad too.  It appears that most of the limb is intact, the pictures really help.  I would probably take it on my hunt too.  I do not see that limb completely breaking in the next 100 shots but would limit my shooting to checking my sites and hunting.  That almost looks cosmetic, the ones I have seen separated that where left in a hot car had much thicker layers than that but this was 7-8 yrs ago.

Possible causes: 1. looks to be in the working part of the limb and being on the outside of the bend where the stress is going it split at a weak spot. or 2. Some type of trauma dropping or something cracked it and then drawing the bow furthered the split.

Quick fix:  There are some glues that have flexible properties but would avoid that for fear of warranty problems.  Duct tape it might help keep it from splitting any farther for the short term.  I would either color the tape with markers or wrap it with mole skin that is camo pattern just to cover the shiny tape.

As you can see I have done my fair share of Redneck engineering.

It seems to be structurally sound...its just enough too really Pi$$ you off.  I am always very careful with her, she's my baby.  The only thing that I can think of is that the dealer dropped it the day I bought it.  Maybe that put a stress crack in it and it finally gave out.  Hoyt has a good warranty but to get it replaced or repaired here in Alaska will take too long to hunt.  I may just wait until blackie is down...I think it's safe for now.  I also have redneck engineered a plenty of things but, this warranty is worth to much to risk...

I see your problem now.  Too far away to get it fixed---That's how I got my redneck engineering degree as a matter of fact.  Good luck to ya.  Is it a bow only season or is that just your weapon of choice.

Good luck

MGM

Called Hoyt today...they are going to try and next day air some new limbs to me.  Should have the Vectrix back in shape by Friday, hopefully.  It is not a bow only hunt, I would like to try for a Pope and Young entry though.  I guess time will tell, at the end of the day I will be happy with a nice rug and some stew meat.

I too have a hoyt (Katera). That would bother me as well... I was wondering if a bow press may have started the problem, but it looks a little far down the limb for that.
