Just like all Internet based stories, if you weren't there to witness it then it probably didn't happen that way.

Single shot or Auto banger with a big clip, NOT in 30-06.

Look at what the Guides carry in Alaska, and that is because   a. They don't like to get chewed up and  b.  it is bad business if their clients are body bagged.

OK, I'm back.  Too much snow down there.  Very little bare ground.  Only saw tracks of one Sow with a cub.  She went back into the den.  When we got up yesterday morning it was snowing hard.  The parking lot that had been clear when we parked was beginning to drift in.  It was snowing so hard we could only see about 10 feet.  Got stuck three times trying to get out to the road.  Had to back up and hit the drifts again to break through.  A smaller truck would not have made it.  Got back home yesterday afternoon.  Will try again in two weeks.

That bear story is a fabrication. It has been disavowed by the hunter. the bear was about 10' and had not eaten anyone. That pic and story keeps popping up on the internet every year or so. botanists have stated the pic with the body, those plants do not grow in alaska.

That's still a bfb! I guess if all you had was a 38, you could hold onto it in hopes that the bear might choke on it when he started eating you.

I got this forwarded to me the other day I thought it interesting.  Has anybody else seen this.

Subject: : Big Damn Bear!

!

The downloaded pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and the bear he had to kill. (killed in self defense).

He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. ?The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. ?The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. ?It stood 12' 6' high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. ?It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol were the remains of the hiker.  The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours!  To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

Partners backed out on me so I took the wife last weekend and went up the Haul Road.  Saw some Black Bears, but they were all small.  Did not see any Grizzlies, but had a nice camping trip with the wife anyway.  Leaving again tomorrow (Monday June 2nd) to go down on the Denali Highway.  Going alone, tired of messing with others that don't want to stay as long as it takes.  I'll probably be gone a week or more.  I'll take the Digital Camera so I can post some pictures, whether I get a bear or not.  Some beautiful country down there.  This highway is directly east of the park.  Same type of terrain, and actually more animals than the park, due to game management.  So many Grizzlies there is no closed season.  F&G is trying to increase the Caribou and Moose  numbers.  Plus the Cows are calving now, its time to save some babies.  Just hope there is not too many tourist.  They sure can mess up a good hunt.

Don't care if you carry a 454 for back-up or not.  Anyone who goes after grizzley with a single shot has bowling balls as part of the manhood! :o  Best of luck to you on your hunt.  By the way, what's the limit on tourists? ;D  DP.

You are right, I did say that.  That is for hunting Moose, where I want it dropped in it's tracks.  Or when we may run into a Grizzly unexpectedly.  When other people are there I too carry a .338 Win Mag.  I will not let anyone come to my camp with anything less than a .338 Win Mag.  I've had too many others fail when the chips were down.  But when I am out by myself, it's a totally different ballgame.

I know my capabilities, and my shortfalls.  I am colorblind, heard of hearing, I have four herniated disk, coronary heart disease, a failed heart by-pass, I'm overweight, I have arthritis, and I was diagnosed with diabetes last month.   But I do a two hour workout with weights every other day when I'm at home, (including Saturday and Sunday) I then ride 10 miles on a stationary bike at the end of each workout.  The days I don't do the workouts I go in and walk 30 minutes on a treadmill at 10% grade at 2.5mph, then another 10 miles on the bike.  Also I can place all of my shots in a six inch pie plate, (the size of a bears heart) from 50 to 500 yards, with either my Handi or my TCR.  Yes my TCR in 30-06 will be in the Camper just in case I need a second gun.

In other words I have confidence in myself and my capabilities that I don't have in others.  And I love being out by myself.  My wife says I am going to become another statistic, maybe so, but at least I will go out doing what I love to do best.  HUNTING   If I get a Grizzly, that's great.  If I don't get a bear, that's OK too.  I know tomorrow night I will be dinning on fresh Lake Trout.  The ice is still on the lakes and ponds yet.  Around the edges the ice has melted off and there is a strip between shore and the ice pack.  Any kind of fly or spinner cast into that ice free area will be sucked up immediately.

And I don't even own a .300 Win Mag.  Don't like the cartridge, don't see it doing anything a 30-06 can't do.

ms:  Ha Ha I do!  Take care, I'm out of here.  Hopfully, I will have some good pictures when I get back.  I leaving later than I had anticipated, had to go into Fairbanks to drop off some Beaver pelts.

Of by the way I am taking a back up for the 30-06.  .454 Casull in a shoulder holster.
