300gr speer bullets for .444 Experiences anyone?
« on: June 12, 2008, 11:51:46 PM »
Hey!

Just bought 44 cal 300gr Speer bullets to use in my .444. Does anyone have any experiences with these bullets (hand/ reloading)? I read in the manual that they should be crimped using the top cannelure to avoid feeding problems. But this cannelure is not deep nor rifled, so I wonder whether it'll cause bullet set backs?

plan on using the bullets for elk and moose (scandinavia).

forgot to mention, my rifle has micro-groove rifling. How will these bullets perform in MG compared to deeper rifling and faster twist rate (1/16 vs 1/32)?

Those Speer 300 grainers should shoot just fine in  your micro-groove Marlin.  Crimp in the forward crimp groove, that's what it is for - it helps set the overall length of the bullet to allow for proper feeding.  That cannelure does not need to be either deep or knurled, it's a crimp groove and you should not have any problems with bullet set-back.

Those bullets have been around for a fairly long time.  They were designed for the 444 and that micro-groove twist.  They should shoot just fine in your rifle.  JMTCW.  Mikey.
