#1 hunter,
You sound by your comments that you are perhaps a bit new to handling hunting rifles.  If you belong to a range or huntclub, spend a little time asking the members what they like to use.  Personnally, I think for the PA woods, as well as my central NY region, a good lever action 30-30 (or as you might guess from my handle the all time deer rifle is the Savage m99 in .300 Savage).  It is the Grandpappy of the .308 that you are leaning towards.
Spend some time trying out various guns in the store for the "feel" and after you find the gun that fits right to you, make your decision on the caliber.  I still love the light and fast action levers, and you can carry one all day w/o breaking a sweat.

#1 :  If those are the two calibers you have to chose from I would opt. for the 308, I havent hunted in Pa. but have hunted in several states with similar terrain, and I am sure that the 308 will do anything you ask of it , and also if the 270 is what you have around it will do the same, end result if the hunter does his part and knows what can and cannot be done with his weapon he wont be doubting the caliber too much, but like savage said find a good lever gun in 30-30 / 35 / or even the 444 for the thicker stuff and go hunting. :D    JIM

Pick a rifle you like.  Chamber in either one and spend some time determining the correct bullet to use.  The variation from bullet to bullet is much greater than the difference between these two calibers on Whitetails.

With the correct bullets no Whitetail would ever no the difference between these two classic calibers.

In fact, I would likely find a mentor who might reload and use the same caliber he/she reloads for.  Might be able to work out a deal for a load your rifle likes.

You cannot go wrong either way.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

My whole entire family has been using .270 for as long as i can remember.
We have a hunting cabin up here in NE PA and we don't kind of frowned upon people that brought lever actions.  They have been nothing but bad luck around here.
Never while hunting.....Just unloading.
BE CAREFUL.  You can be the most cautious person in the world and just the slightest wrong movement and goodbye to whatever is in the path of the barrel.

There is really no right or wrong answer.  That said, I would opt for the .308 for the following reasons:

PA hunting "generally" does not mean long distance shooting.  In addition, the smaller action means you can find rifles that are shorter and thus easier to maneuver.  Moreover, PA deer are much bigger than deer in the South.  As such, added bullet diameter and weight is welcome.

I would use 150 grain bullets in the .308 (and BTW, it's a .308 Winchester, not .308 Remington.   )

I'd take my 308 over a 270 anyday in the mountains. Don't misunderstand I love the 270 for long open shots but, I believe in Penn. u cannot use the semi-auto and I like a short action bolt over the long action. Also in the mountains the bigger the hole the better the blood trail. I've had deer leap 30 ft downhill and dissapper when hit and with a small caliber the more blood on the first blood the easier to trail. If they drop one speck in that first 50 yds and u mise that speck it's so easy to lose the deer. That's why I gave up on the 243 and the 25-06 for the hill country. I have a 660 Remington in 308 that I've had for about 7 yrs and have probably took 30+ deer with it, some out to 300 yds. It's a little short little carbine and I got spoiled by it on the first hunt. If u could find one in a Rem. 600, 660, or model 7 it's a great little rifle.

how do you find a deer that has been shot with a 270?   go to where it was when you shot it and look down.

This questions kinda like whats better, cherry or apple pie ?

Both are more than totally capable of taking any deer on the planet. The 270 has a longer range advantage over the 308. Thats about it.

These are the two most popular calibers in NZ where I live.In the mountains the .270 is most popular and in the bush the .308.A lot of guys use the 3030 on pigs with dogs.I have used a .308 all my hunting life but I
would happly use a .270.Both top calibers..Cheers..
