Whats going to be next years "hot" fur?
« on: June 10, 2008, 10:37:09 AM »
Lets take a poll on what people think is going to be the fur to catch come next fall? I think in the early  auction coon & beaver will still move well! But after that i have no idea! Since i thought that grays were going to do well and guess what? They didn't even sell --yet!

Bet it will be coon--coon --coon. I do expect advances on our other furs, because of short catches.
Some trappers will let gas prices shut them down--expect that to put money in the rest of our pockets. Short catches--mean better prices for the rest of us.
 Next season--trap harder--trap smarter.

I'm with Tom, I'm already thinking about how, when, and where I want to trap to this fall. Trips to and from areas must be limited, maximum sets are a must, and moving around as different seasons open.

I have secured 4 new farms in the area and they all have corn in the ground! That should help put up some #'s of coon!  Word of mouth from other farmers that i have trapped for in the past accounts for 3 out of 4 the farms! I love when they call you!! Treat them with respect and respect thier property and good things happen! Could be a good year!

I have a pretty substantial coon line that takes me over 100 miles a day with the way the farms are spaced. With my truck only doing between 10 - 15 MPG going in and out of 4 wheel drive and gas at $4.00. I think I'm going to have to try to plug in more farms = more ground, and shorten the run. I can always move from the first half of my line to the second half as my catch drops. I've been planning to tighten my line for years as it was spaced for fox and coyotes and by permission. The fuel price is just going to force me to actually do this year what I really should have done a few years back. With coon having a smaller territory than fox and coyote a guy really can just go farm to farm if you can get that kind of permission.
O-Yeah I agree it will probably be coon again too. Less guys out there better for me.

coon like tom has siaid and i think maybe rats and beaver will shine too, got some of the best prices on my southern beaver last season as i ever had selling local.
greys may still be hot too, so with gas over 3.80 a gallon and heading up i'll be trapping close to home and really trying to trap smart.
the way i work with our crazy shifts i'll have to run half the time on gas just for trapping and half my checks will be gas coming home from work and checking. man gonna have to cut out the deadhead running and have traps to check as he goes.
