Take a look at the brittiany spaniel. It is a natural retriever( does not need to be force trained to retrieve) and is the only spaniel that points. IT WEIGHS 30 - 35 # and loves the water as well. it is very trainable and makes a great house dog as well. Very smart and cute as hell, but tough as nails. Be sure to get one from a good breeded and at 7 weeks - not 10 as often seen in papers.
